2. And Larry Doby, too.
Let's not forget the American Leaguer who went through much of the same crap Jackie did...

5. Speaking of Jackie--I see Rachel Robinson was quoted in a story this week
Still eloquent as always, I see...

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/06/04/obama.history/

Rachel Robinson, widow of baseball player and African-American pioneer Jackie Robinson, said Obama is a "champion of social change."

"His success is a reminder that no one who dares to stand up and challenge the status quo does so alone," she said.

8. I saw Jackie Robinson many years ago.......
...talking and, yes, smiling with Roy Campanella, as they made the long walk from the clubhouse to the dugout in the old Polo Grounds.

I saw Don Newcombe, and Joe Black, and all the boys of summer back then at Ebbets Field. That was my team.

And one time, I was at a Farmers Market on Long Island around that time, and who comes walking in my direction with a crowd around him, but Jackie Robinson....

I was very young back then, and I could never figure out - and still cannot, why the dumb asses that ran baseball waited so long to integrate. Thanks to Branch Rickey - the Brooklyn Dodgers owner...a man of vision.

One more thing. Being a Republican in those days was not the same as being a Republican today. It was a different Republican Party. Don't hold that against Jackie Robinson.
