Mark Warner for VP?
I know he's running for the Virginia senate seat, but in my opinion, he would be a terrific VP choice for Obama....He was a very effective governor there, & Rethugs will have a very difficult time painting him as some out of touch liberal...(though they'll try to paint Obama & ANY VP choice as out of touch elitists, that is to be expected from those clowns)..

Question is, if he would be asked & accept the VP ticket, who would likely run for senate in his place?....

6. See, I totally agree with you there...Democrats are going to pick up
several senate seats this fall, & Virginia is easily the #1 pick-up...Hell, he's beating "Happy" Gilmore by 20-25% in most polls..

It would be great to have TWO Democratic senators from Virginia, which is not exactly blue state CA. or NY...

11. Exactly-we NEED John Warner's senate seat
we are using the old republican trick of putting a candidate with the same name for the same seat-this time though it's actually a REAL candidate who will do some good for his state and this country

more business experience and a bit more name recognition. Both guys are awesome, I met them when I lived in the Commonwealth. :hi:

he would be a terrific VP. It was especially terrific to watch his continual improvement while Governor. His speeches got better, his working the system improved, etc. I could see him following in Gore's "reinventing govt" footsteps, for instance.

But it would cost us a Senate seat...

4. If it has to be a Virginian, I say Jim Webb is a better choice.
Warner's almost certain to win election to the Senate; there's no need to put him on the ticket and possibly give up a Democratic seat. Jim Webb, of course, is ALSO a senator, BUT Tim Kaine, the Democratic governor, would appoint and replacement to fill Webb's seat, and there would be a special election in 2 years to select a permanent replacement (and Kaine is term-limited, and would be likely to both run for Senate and win).

28. Kaine would likely be going against Tom Davis...if so, he would probably lose...
If we take Webb as the VP, we must be prepared to lose that Senate seat, as that's probably the most likely possibility. As a Virginian, I'm pretty much thrilled with the prospect of having two US senators, and would like to keep it that way. And for extra goodies, now I can potentially get a representative I can respect (Davis is my rep - he retired so welcome Mr. Connelly!!!).

10. I think Warner would be great
Im sure the Obama camp is heavily weighing the Senate issue and they should. However, if they feel he is the best choice and would flip Virginia then they need to pick him. I truly believe that Al Gore would have been President had he picked Bob Grahm who is hugely popular in Florida. Problem was they didnt want to lose a Senate seat. Its a sticky situation but President comes first.

12. I think the question is whether or not Jim Gilmore is particularly popular
Warner makes that seat a lock but there are other Democrats who could win it. The question is whether or not Gilmore or another Democrat would have the edge.

27. There really is no other democrat on the horizen if Warner gets VP...
And believe me, while the MSM makes VA sound like the next democratic bastion of humanity, its anything but. Webb BARELY won by the slimmest of margins, and only then because of the insanely bad candidate that George Allen became.

Bottom line, as bad a Gilmore is, if Warner is removed, Gilmore suddenly becomes the odds-on favorite. But Gilmore is vulnerable, so perhaps we could recycle Doug Wilder or Gerry Baliles or something. We just have to be happy that the Repubs removed Tom Davis for us.

13. That's the tough call; it's a sure fire pick up if Warner runs for the senate seat
However, if he's the running mate of Obama, then 13 electoral votes come the Democrats way...

Very tough decision for the Obama & Warner camps..

14. what would his chances be running for both VP and the Senate
as Lieberman did in 2000? Would this even be an option in Virginia? I know his position in the Senate election is not the same as Lieberman's was (as pretty much a shoo-in), but I'm curious as to the prospects. If he won, a democratic governor could then appoint his successor. That would be cool :)

17. No.
Warner was a great governor and will be a great senator. There is a smorgasbord of bright, capable candidates for the Vice-Presidency. We don't need to pluck one from the Senate race and possibly blow a sure thing.

As for senators and governors, it should be among those who are not up for re-election (or election, in Warner's case) this year. A VP should also not outshine the nominee.

As for governors, the best choice would be Kathleen Sebelius from Kansas.

Indiana Senator and former two-term governor Evan Bayh would be a superb choice. He has national security credentials as well. On top of that, at 53, he can run for president in 8 years. He would also put Indiana in play. With Indiana in play, the Republicans would still be a slight favorite but they would have to divert money from their Ohio campaign to do so, thereby giving us a better chance of picking up Ohio. Bayh was also a big Clinton supporter so his presence could reassure some of Clinton's supporters.

As for Webb, I think he's a good choice, at least for the long list. He does have some controversy but it won't hurt Obama. It MIGHT be annoying and take the ticket off message, though.

32. I disagree. Warner flat out wins the state. Kaine does not...
Kaine is really struggling with the asinine republican controlled Senate. He does not have a rep anywhere close to Warner right now. He's good and all, but I don't think you see a definite win with him.

On the plus side, he will help out with other evangelicals who are dissatisfied with McCain though. I wouldn't be surprised if he helps in North Carolina, Ohio, and Georgia, for instance.

48. You want to appeal to evangelicals dissatisfied with McCain? Kaine was a missionary in Honduras plus
as a Catholic from Virginia, Kaine would have strong appeal in the demographic prevalent in western Virginia where Obama could use some additional support.

Foreign policy and national security credentials - PLUS, we wouldn't lose an existing Dem seat in the Senate AND he could bring in the HRC-die-hards.

26. Webb is a sexier pick, but Clark really has no downside...Webb does have a son who fought...
in Iraq. That sort of lends extra credibility. But it would be fairly amusing to see McCain contradicting a General on military policy. I would be happy if Clark was on the ticket.

25. Warner is the only one that flat-out guarantees VA, but we lose a Senate seat...
As a Virginian, I can say with confidence that if Warner is on the ticket, Obama wins VA. I don't think either Kaine or Webb give that a definite.

But Warner also guarantees us a Senate seat. If he leaves, we could be looking at a Jim Gilmore senate success - we DO NOT want that.

In looking at the other two Virginians, Kaine is good with evangelicals, so he might help out with the "southern state" strategy, helping out in North Carolina and Georgia. But he's had a rough time with the Republican-controlled congress, so his accomplishments aren't great yet.

Webb obviously is appealing because he pretty much nullifies McCain's Iraq experience and judgment argument. He does have issues with his previous women comments though, and worse (or better, depending on your disposition), the guy doesn't ever sugar-coat things, and sometimes opens his mouth wider than he should. If we pick Webb, we can expect a few gaffs (truths that shouldn't have been uttered in public).

34. I want the Senate seat. Warner will likely be President, someday.
I must say, he is a PHENOMENAL speaker, with a great understanding of policy and the issues facing most Americans.

He also has a very commanding presence about him. When he speaks, people listen.

I wish we could take him. Boy Virginia really has a deep Democratic bench with Warner, Kaine and Webb.

Who woulda thunk it, coming from such a conservative state?
