Vilsack to Obama: Pick Clinton as running mate

By CHARLOTTE EBY, Courier Des Moines Bureau
DES MOINES --- Former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack is urging presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama to choose Hillary Clinton as his running mate, saying the move would help unite the Democratic Party for the coming general election. Vilsack was Clinton's most prominent supporter in Iowa ahead of the state's presidential caucuses, and has campaigned extensively for her. In an interview with Lee Enterprises, Vilsack said putting Obama and Clinton on the ticket would galvanize Democrats.

"First of all, I think if he believes, and I'm sure he does, that a unified Democratic Party is important to our chances of success and his chances of success, nothing would unify the party more quickly, in my view, than extending an offer to Sen. Clinton to join him. Certainly, this is going to be an historic election. This would make it without doubt, extraordinarily historic."

He called Clinton a great partner in both campaigning and governing, as well as a help in expanding Obama's base of support. "There's no question, she reaches out to women, that she reaches out to some other voters that were supportive of her “ the 18 million people that voted for her, particularly in some of the important swing states," Vilsack said.

<snip>

Harkin said pressure shouldn't be put on Obama to choose Clinton.

"I do think that's inappropriate, and I will not be any part of putting pressure on him to pick one person or the other," Harkin said. "I know Barack Obama well; he's a deliberative person. He's going to be very careful about who he picks as vice president, and I don't think it's going to happen right away. I think it's going to take some time."

34. I doubt it. He's done nothing but spout the DLC party line.
Their last hope is to get one of their own in as VP. Particularly now that Dean is confirmed in heading the DNC for another term - that means his 50 state strategy will undermine the DLC's strategy for good, as Obama kicks McCain's butt without depending on one or two critical swing states - the brilliant strategy that lost us the last two GEs.

It's the DLC's last gasp - and like cornered rats they will fight all the harder because of it.

I dread the next few months.

18. Many would do a better job than Reid
What has she done to deserve it?

Other than Divide the Senate with her behavior this campaign?

She needs to go back to D.C. and work her way back into the good graces of the Senate body.

Then she can make demands (I didn't see Biden or Dodd demand a post after their return from the campaign trail....did you?)

Poor guy never polled above 4th place in the primary. It's almost like he's just a rumor there - "We've got a governor, right? What's his name again? Or her name? Dang, do we even have a governor?"

You got every right to be pissed at the DLC, because they used your ass, after all you did for them in 2004. But your Queen isn't on the ticket.
