When Obama announces his v.p. pick,
I think everyone will be totally surprised. He has run his campaign differently than any before him, he has taken donations differently than any before him, why does anyone think he will pick his v.p. using criteria that the candidates before used? I don't think anyone will be able to figure out who is actually on the short list because they don't know his requirements.

1. Good point.
He needs to get someone who has the same goals as he does, and who want to clean up our government and give the people a voice instead of allowing big corporations to run things. There needs to be tougher law on lobbying, and his VP needs to be someone who is in the same boat on all of the changes Obama wants to make.

2. I agree. Obama does things his own way and won't bow to party pressure or conventional wisdom--
even if he ends up with one of the "short-list" names most often tossed out there, it will be because he personally weighed that choice and decided on it on his own. He won't be Reagan, forced into taking Bush at the last minute during the convention. And he won't be Kennedy, forced into taking LBJ.

20. deluded much? what is this "arrogance" of which you speak? examples? links?
you just sound like a bitter, shriveled-up Hillary "supporter" who will soon be history on this board.

19. His entire history in the Senate suggests exactly the opposite
He's essentially gone along to get along, and hasn't taken the lead on anything remotely controversial. Indeed, he's crossed over and voted with the Republicans several times, much like other "moderate" Democrats.

Whther this pattern holds up with his VP choice, we'll just have to wait and see.

3. I was just saying that in another thread, the citeria is flipped a bit too
Edited on Fri Jun-06-08 11:23 AM by Boz
People were talking about Webb to carry Virgina and I said that no longer is the works, you dont have to pick a candidate to carry a state because anyone and all of the 3 virgina possibilities could move people from the bottom to vote because it the ground game and the bottom up that matters now.

Its a different world and choosing a candidate for geographical reason is the old top down way of politics.

Just look at the last 2 days its already a whole different Democratic Party, one that is acting like a collective mesh planning its downtickets more cohesively and planning impact in all 3 branches, not just one.

4. I fully expect his VP choice to be unique and thought-provoking.
He said it will reflect the direction he wants to take the country.

10. Wow, did he say that??
During the Brian Williams interview he said it would be the most important decision he makes before becoming president, and it will signal how he runs his presidency. (I assumed he meant thoughtfully and without responding to pressure.) What have I missed?

12. I get the feeling he means business when he says there will be no leaks on this.
I guess we have to wait until Christmas morning to open our presents! :D

6. Yes. I'm really curious as to who he will chose for that and later
for other positions. Obama is an interesting thinker. :)

7. Maybe
That would augur well for a Mike Bloomberg or someone like a General McPeak or Zinni.

I don't think so though.

I think it will be Strickland, unless vetting disqualifies him.

9. Obama won't be choosing a V.P. based on getting elected
He's said that in public already. His top priority is signaling how he will govern, not who can win a swing-state for him.

15. I have no doubt he will choose a qualified person
Of course, Strickland can govern too. He was a longtime liberal Ohio congressman (so he knows the Hill) and as a Governor he has executive experience.

11. I completely agree
I believe that besides the normal vetting process, there will be additional criteria that excludes most of the names that we hear discussed as VP.

16. He's going to select donor #1,272,184 as VP. Myself.
That will really throw a wrench in the works. Two good looking, young men. I will draw back some of the women and will consolidate the blue collar vote with my genuine union background. The stoners will be behind me 100%, that's twenty million votes.
