(former) Senator Max Cleland

"On April 8, with a month left in his tour, Cleland was ordered to set up a radio relay station on a nearby hill. A helicopter flew him and two soldiers to the treeless top of Hill 471, east of Khe Sanh. Cleland knew some of the soldiers camped there from Operation Pegasus. He told the pilot he was going to stay a while. Maybe have a few beers with friends.
When the helicopter landed, Cleland jumped out, followed by the two soldiers. They ducked beneath the rotors and turned to watch the liftoff. Cleland reached down to pick up the grenade he believed had popped off his flak jacket. The blast slammed him backward, shredding both his legs and one arm. He was 25 years old... "

1. Good counter to McCain's Vietnam mojo
2. It'll possibly help in Georgia
3. It'd be the best revenge on Saxby Chamblis

5. What happened to this good man in 2002 was a disgrace, CaliforniaPeggy.
I was talking about this with my partner the other night. How Obama HAS to be thinking about his Cabinet choices. Of course, I have ZERO clout in the Obama campaign right now...but I DO hope he would give consideration to Max Cleland heading up Veterans Affairs. :-)

9. When I heard what they had done to him in that election,
I was so damn outraged.

It was criminal.

Obama is a smart guy; I'll bet he's thinking about Max too...

11. Cleland is already part of the strong network that was put together last year behind Obama.
He has had some health issues, but seems to be doing OK now.

He's in the circle.

4. I like that idea
He'd be perfect to be in charge of Veterans Affairs.

7. That's where I had him on my "dream team" cabinet list.

Who better to understand veterans' issues than a man who left half his body in Vietnam?

The sleaze campaign against him in Georgia was inexcusable, and the DIEBOLDING of his senate race was outright criminal.

8. I love Dennis, but I don't see him in the VP seat.
Put him in charge of health care, where he can do the most good.... getting HR 676 passed "by any means necessary".

10. Dennis would be a decent pick, actually
We need all the help we can get to win Ohio.

My point was a) Cleland is a really good man and b) I despise Chamblis
