"Obama Privately Rebuked Lieberman For Half-Heartedly Denying False Muslim Rumors
By Greg Sargent - June 9, 2008, 8:58AM
Newsweek gets some detail on what Obama told Joe Lieberman in that confrontation on the Senate floor last week...

In a brief but animated Senate floor confrontation last week, according to a campaign aide who asked for anonymity when talking about private discussions, Obama told Lieberman he was surprised by Lieberman's personal attacks and his half-hearted denials of the false rumors that Obama is a Muslim.
There's also this:

McCain spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker says Lieberman "played a key role in reaching out to the Jewish community in the primary ... and you can expect that will continue."

Translation: Lieberman will continue cranking out the slime from now until Election Day 2008, and perhaps beyond, though at that point he may well be doing it from the minority side of the aisle..."

I wonder if this is true. I can definitely believe it. I also wouldn't put it past Joe to stoke the "farrakhan fires", which is ironic, because I just read an article in the Nation that quoted some glowing praise of farrakhan by Joe a couple of years ago, along with a hope by Joe to "meet him someday".

10. They don't have to tolerate him much longer...

Lieberman lost to another democrat in the primary, so he ran as a third-party candidate and won -- beating out a real democrat. He calls himself an "Independent Democrat." He caucuses with the Democrats but doesn't act like one.

They've tolerated him to keep -- in some cases, anyway -- a 51-49 majority, but now that the dems are winning more seats, they're going to be telling Joe where he can stick it more and more.

I really wonder whether he'll be able to get elected again anyway.

18. Don't forget the mealy-mouthed war mongering...

And with all that big talk, you know Lieberman is the type who would be the first one dropping a load in his shorts and crying for mommy if he were actually at the battle.

4. That would be sweet, and well-deserved. Too bad it's not going to
happen, at least until we see where we stand in November.

6. It will happen what, you reap what you sow!
I hope it happens like this,
J. Liebermann is standing next to McSame correcting him from another mistaken gaffe
when all of sudden the Brain that they share jumps out of J. Lieberman's head and takes off running to go jump off a cliff. And both men stand there with their jaws stuck open, not knowing what to say next, All on live TV!

have his own very important committee to head - the "clean restroom" committee.

9. Lieberman is a disgrace
He should be stripped of the Chairmanship on the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. Hopefully after a much larger Senate majority is achieved this coming Nov., such will be done

13. A post over at TPM summed up Liebermann pretty well.
I agree with this post about Lieberman. He's painted himself in a corner and the only thing left for him is to hope for a long shot cabinet position with a McCain administration.

Lieberman is in a very delicate political position. His value to Republicans, and his popularity with them, is that he is a Democrat who criticizes Democrats mercilessly. If he were to become a Republican he would quickly become just another RINO (Republican in Name Only) Senator from New England. His policy positions are, except for his intense support of any military action in the middle east, pretty middle of the road for New England and thus are well to the left of the Republican party. He would be just another Jim Jeffords or Lincoln Chaffee - and they both felt very uncomfortable in the Bush era Republican Party. And this is why he has continued to caucus with the Democrats.

But this has meant that Joe has had to walk a tightrope - he criticizes the Democrats enough to keep his popularity up with the Republicans, but doesn't go so far as to have the Democrats dump him from the caucus. He's played the thin 51-49 majority for all it is worth.

His recent actions, however, may indicate that Joe realizes he can't walk this tightrope forever. His popularity in CT is down near Bush territory, and with the Democrats likely to have a larger majority in the Senate come November, his leverage will be gone. My guess is that he realizes this is his last term in the Senate, and his last year with any leverage, so he's placing an all-or-nothing bet on a McCain victory. Joe is angling for either the VP slot or a high position in the McCain cabinet.

My guess is that barring the unthinkable idea of a McCain administration, Joe will be defeated when he runs again.
