Does Obama Make You Feel Old?
Obama, if he's elected, will be the first president I've been within 20 years of in age. He's 17 years older than me.

In a way that makes me feel old, because I've always thought of presidents as people who were my father's age or older.

My father is 58, 11 years older than Obama.

I think it'll make me feel really old when the day comes that I'm older than the president himself.

That's gotta be weird.

So, does Obama make you feel old?

What makes me feel old is the realization that all my doctors are younger than me!

4. That makes you what, 25? Everyone's older than you!
Heck, most baseball players are older than you. You'll start feeling old when you're older than all the players but then it will really hit you when when you're older than all the managers. That's why I root for all the "old" managers like Joe Torre.

5. Athletes did it for me.

I'm 17 years older than you too, and it was when I realized I was older than all the professional atheletes that I got that feeling somewhat.

But the big one was when I noticed the look on a coworker's face that read, "this guy must know what he is talking about cause he's like, you know, really old and stuff."

Fucking punk ass kids.

Edited on Mon Jun-09-08 04:23 PM by nsd
I hoping that once I hit the magic number, the feeling will pass or at least dissipate.

ETA: Actually what really makes me feel old is listening to people who are much younger than I am complain about getting old :)

I'm 43 and am having more fun now than I did at 33. I don't care as much about what others think of me but I'm wiser and am still young enough to go out and do most things.

Obama being 3 and a half years older than me is fantastic!! It's like a peer running for Pres. I love it!!

that doesn't make me feel old. That will make him the youngest president ever (or on the short list).

I'll tell you I find interesting about him:

We were both born in the 60's, and I lived in Chicago for a period of time during which he was living there, as well. Big deal, I know, but somehow that makes me feel close to him, in a way.

And my degree of separation from him is literally one.

85. Me, too! His message of hope takes me back to the 60s and I remember...I remember....
passage of the voting rights act, civil rights act, sit-ins, desegregation, Mississippi, Alabama, Kent State, protests, riots, VietNam, JFK, MLK, RFK, MLK Jr, Malcolm X. These social upheaval of the 60s HAD to occur to get us to where we are today. BHO resonates with the activists of my generation as no one has since MLK Jr. For me, he epitomizes what the 60s upheaval was about - civil rights! The fact that he is of mixed heritage is just icing on the cake!

21. No, and I am almost 60
that is because I do want CHANGE. It would be very difficult to find someone my age or older who is willing to accept change. I have seen it far too often. I look at some people my age and older and find I have nothing whatsoever in common with them.

It really is a state of mind. I know some people who are old, stuck in the past, at 40. My grandma and uncle-in-law were "young" well into their 80s, but that is not the average person I am finding.

Ditto - and I bet you look years younger than your age, as I do. Good genes and longevity in my family - gradmothers on both sides of family are 99 and 101, going strong.

Interestingly enough, I read recently that the people most critical of John McCain's age are people who are OLDER than HE....

64. Nope...
I am 51.

He is younger by just a few years. Nobody makes me feel old... Not even my kids who are 7 and 8.

:D

it's just odd for me to be the age when lots of folks move on to positions of great power and to still be a little ol' "type B"

Presidents have always been a lot older than me. Obama is the first president within a decade of my age. Ugh.

72. I'm 45, which means I'm almost the age of the next president
It does make me feel old, because I grew up with presidents always being "old guys". And now I'm the same age as the president. :(

90. Damn. I mean, I had no idea...
... that there were so many crusty, old people on DU!! :yourock:

I felt old because Obama is only 10 years older than I am and now I read that there are some DU'ers whose CHILDREN are older than Obama! I am in awe of the technological prowess of these participants, particularly as my mother (at age 57) has to have my 16 year old cousin answer text messages on her cell phone for her. And thinks the best way to fix her DirectTV satellite reception is to keep unplugging the cable box and then plugging it back in. Never mind the gale force winds and hurricane outside, if she can just unplug it, wait a few seconds and then plug it back in, the picture on the tv should then work perfectly fine in her world.

I don't feel nearly as old now as I did before I saw this thread. Thanks, Magic Rat, you young'un!
