Question about Impeachment!

When Obama becomes president, is there any possibility that congress can conduct a more thorough investigation into the dealings of the Bush Administration? Once all of the information comes out about all of the wrongdoings, can Congress than prosecute? Or, is there a way they can be brought before the World Court and put on trial there?

I believe an Impeachment process, at this point, will hurt Obama's chances of winning the election.

But it won't happen.

Why? Because it will not be a priority of what we all hope is a new Democratic administration and a new, bulked up Democratic majority in the House and Senate. Punishing chimpy and gang isn't going to be an issue in the 2008 presidential campaign, you can take that to the bank. And when the Democrats control the House, Senate and WH, it won't suddenly become a priority over the issues that were front and center in the campaign, such as health care and energy and the war. Those are where the effort is going to be put in the first year of Obama's first term (plus, possibly, some telecommunications legislation, not because it will be as high a priority, but merely because a relativley obscure law relating to direct broadcast satellites expires at the end of 2009 and the effort to extend that law could become a vehicle for other changes in the Communications Act and/or Copyright Act.

Impeachment has only one remedy: removal from office. Therefore, it can only be considered while Bush is in office. Of course, impeachment is just the vote by the House to prosecute. The senate votes on guilt. The only punishment is removal from office.

If the senate votes to remove, that's it, and it is effective immediately. There is no appeal.

The point of impeachment really is to shame the person. So, yes, that is still on the table.

These criminals should have been impeached a long time ago. They did enough dirty shit during Bush's first term to warrant impeachment *and* conviction.

The problem is that impeachment is a political action, not a legal one. And with the Rethugs controlling Congress through that first term, it was never going to happen.

Now that the Dems have finally found their spines, I still doubt that they have enough votes to impeach. And I'm sure there aren't enough votes in the Senate to convict.

Plus there's definitely not enough time to do it.

But I'm thrilled that these Articles of Impeachment are being read into the official congressional record; but to actually do it at this point is (IMO) a waste of time, effort, and money.
