John McCain has caught some flack over the last few weeks for his lack of technological savvy and penchant for golf memorabilia. Now those two attributes have combined for a new round of McCain mocking in the blogosphere.
The expansive store of campaign memorabilia available on the Republican candidate’s Web site includes a $50 “golf pack,” which by the way is still prominently featured on the front page of McCain’s site.
In what now seems a misguided attempt to achieve some Web 2.0 street cred, the McCain campaign had encouraged users to post reviews of the memorabilia on the page. Problem was, apparently nobody thought to moderate the reviews that were posted, resulting in a slew of insults hurled at McCain from online pranksters.
It two at least two days, and notices from a half-dozen blogs, before the McCain campaign scrubbed the site of the offending comments. Democratic candidate Barack Obama also appears to have disabled reviews on his campaign memorabilia store sometime Wednesday morning. A quick glance at the reviews left there earlier in the day didn’t reveal any mockery; Obama’s reviewers seemed to be genuinely weighing in on the items they purchased.
For McCain mockers worldwide, the insulting reviews have been archived by John Cole at Balloon Juice and the Wonkette, DailyKos and Gawker.
“The 2000 Father’s Day McCain Golf Pack had more balls. This golf pack is too much like the George W. Bush golf pack I got last year,” read one review. “But, I will show those Obama supporters that i’m (sic) no elitist when I knock a hole in one.”
Another review of the golf gear asked when the store would offer “a Joe Lieberman Certified McCain Ballwasher.”
Reviewers also mocked a flub from McCain’s widely panned June 3 speech in reviewing a water bottle offered on the site.
“I bought fifteen of these bottles, filled them with hot water, and gave them to all of the dehydrated babies I know,” one wrote.
