Obama himself lends credence to this in his book.
Since his mother was under 21 when he was born I think there's some obscure law that questions his citizenship.
I don't think the argument will go anywhere--it just makes a counter argument when the idea comes up that McCain was born outside the boundary of the Panama Canal Zone.

Well DUH, it's a COPY! Not an original! The original birth certificate is the government's and you're issued with a copy of your birth certificate. If you request a copy of your birth certificate they'll give you a copy, and date the copy when it was issued.

Geez. I swear that people are trying too hard.

They were expecting a copy of the actual document from 1961, when instead they got a...horrors!...MODERN DOCUMENT WITH ALL THE ORIGINAL 1961 INFORMATION PRINTED ON IT!!!!!! Just like the State of Ohio issued to me a few years ago when I went back to the county health department where I was born and asked them to give ME a copy of MY birth certificate!!!!

They didn't give me a stamped photocopy of the actual certificate filled out when I was born, like the one I'd had for years...rather, they gave me a document that looked like THIS one! On watermarked paper, printed in a modern font, but stamped and certified just like the other one!

I have presented it each and every time I've come home from Canada on a trip, accompanied by my photo ID from the state, and I have yet to have anyone in U.S. Customs and Immigration say to me: "That's a FAKE!"

Poor freepers and Malkinites. They must never travel anywhere. After all, if you love the good ole USA, why would you EVER leave it? And they think this is just another Dan Rather scandal...if they can PROVE the paperwork is modern rather than old, they've got a fake on their hands.

Uh, guys, no. The document even SAYS on the bottom that it's on a form last revised in 2001. This is what states issue now when you request a copy of your birth certificate...it's less easy for terrorists and criminals to copy and use for identity theft purposes than the form filled out when you were actually born.

To wrap up: DUH.

And that's pretty much what it looks like. Equally spaced lines, on a modern typewriter or printer, watermarked with the county of record's seal. It is very rare these days for anyone to get an actually photocopy of the original birth certificate. In fact, it can be difficult to even look at it unless you are a family member. Same thing for death certificates. These rules came around because people were trolling records for the names and SS#'s of children who died young, then taking their names and identities.

As a ex-journalist and a sometimes family researcher, I can vouch that this document looks accurate for a copy of a birth certificate made since 1999.

I helped my parents both get certified copies of their birth certificates, just like this one, last year when they were headed off for a cruise. It's what you get if you need a passport.
