"Ghetto" Students-NOT For Obama-"Not because they didn't like him-because they were afraid for him"
Edited on Fri Jun-13-08 12:10 PM by kpete
I have a friend, she's a teacher in Milwaukee at a charter school so deep in the ghetto, you can see a strip-club from her classroom window. It's only two buildings down.

When Obama became the presumptive nominee, one of the pundits, Chris Matthews I believe, said he wished he could be a teacher in an inner-city school, just then....

My friend laughed.

When she asked her few 18 year old or near 18 year old students, most of whom are poor and black, whether they were excited to vote Obama, those that would actually vote... didn't want to vote for him.

Not because they didn't like him. But because they were afraid for him.

more sadness here:

1. a lot of young people (esp. young poor men of color) don't believe they'll make it to 25, no
surprise there about their response. sad, but true.

3. I work in a school with a somewhat similar population
as one of its parts. Nearly to a person that population was very excited about voting for Obama. In my AFM classes, where probably about 2/3 are African American and like about 1/2 of that would be 'ghetto', they registered like crazy.

4. On the other hand, Barack may be a salvation for them once elected....
To be perfectly honest, I am afraid for him as well and every day I find my self doing a little hoping...

6. So much insight into a world I can't comprehend in that post; thanks for sharing it.
""All good men know someone wants to stop them.

That shouldn't stop us from supporting them. If he's brave enough to run, we should be brave enough to vote for him."'

Exactly; and that's a very good reason we MUST vote for him. Thank you, LoneBlackMan.

7. Imagine how much they fear the pain they would experience,
if they were to get their hopes up and then . . . . !!!

8. I read that at first as "afraid
of him"..I'm like, "what?". He's not scary..it's only Obama.

But, yeah..we're all thinking positive thoughts to keep the vicious a$$holes at bay.

The Obamas are fully aware and are doing it anyway.

9. "It frustrates me when I see people...
...thinking this is going to be easy."

Who said it would be "easy"? Even a failed attempt would create an atmosphere in this country that I would not want to see. I am a black man who has every intention of voting for Obama but the thought of someone taking a shot at him does weigh on my mind. I understand why these students are afraid. I'm sure no one thought taking out the WTC would be "easy" either but it happened.

10. Have had that conversation
with voters during the primaries. Sad that people have a fear that the candidate they like might be killed.
