First of alll I don't think anyone can easly replace Russert.....

But to do do MTP ytou have to have rhe respect of Washington and though I love KO fro what he is..... he does not have sufficient respect across the political spectrum. Mostly because He does not hole the political establuishment in much respect or regard.

It's a bad fit and he would hate it

Agree?

15. Might be too soon - but he is a REAL talent with
a nose for news and FACTS.

Never KO - and please no, never Tweety.

I think Todd could handle it - I think he can do just about anything. I have never been so quickly impressed by a "newcomer" .

He is a nuts and bolts guy - but has entered the camera side of things very smoothly. Probably due to Russert's mentoring.

So maybe not too soon. Russert brought him on board -- it would be a fitting legacy.

67. Chuck Todd has a sharp mind, but perhaps not sharp claws
He could very easily hold his own based strictly on political knowledge and acuity, but I can't envision him going after someone with the tenacity of a Russert.

73. I got the sense several times today on Morning Joe that Todd is the heir apparent.
They didn't come out and say as much, of course, but the subtext was there.

In any case, I think out of respect this kind of discussion can be put on hold for a while.

71. I agree. Trying to pretend that the Bush policies are okay is more partisan.
So many people are calling Olberman partisan when he's just telling the truth about the crimes of the Bush administration. PRETENDING that the Bush officials were reasonable as most TV news pundits have done and giving them respectful attention when their actions overturned decades of U.S. foreign policy was far more partisan than Keith's scathing critiques.

He did MTP, but he was also the head of the Washington news bureau. Matthews, Mitchell, Gregory, et al would sometimes call him the boss when speaking about him.

They'll have to fill 2 spots. I'm sure they don't have anyone who could step in and do both right off the bat.

40. If the decision were mine ....... just off the top of my head .... not fully thought out .....
Brian Williams to MTP

Olbermann to Nightly News

Maddow to fill Olbermann's hour

Williams would make the perfect bland host. Return the show to its old format, but with more of a role for the moderator (Williams)

Olbermann, I have long felt, is the prototype for the new news anchor ..... irreverent but grave when need be. Fast paced. Not taking one self too seriously. He would, however, have to turn off the partisanship.

Maddow just needs to do what she does.

43. here's the problem, I think
Years ago, when Keith returned to MSNBC, he told me in an e-mail that the bigwigs had told him that when his numbers were up, he would have control of the content of Countdown, and that was important to him. (Yes, he used to be able to answer his own e-mail!) Obviously, that has happened for him. He has attracted a partisan audience that drove up his numbers, and therefore he has control of content to a great degree.

Network news would not allow that kind of independence.

FWIW.

46. I rather see KO 5 days a week myself
and I'm not sure he'd be a good fit on Meet the Press, I have to disagree with you about the respect for Washington.

It seems to me that these so-called journalists who are supposed to be keeping the public informed spend too much time schmoozing with these people at cocktail parties and it shows up as rather fawning behavior when they're supposed to be digging for the truth during an interview.

I've often found these talking head folks way to deferential and unwilling to call out a politician when they're lying. Especially when the politician has an R after his name.

I'd like to see Amy Goodman but these Washington folk couldn't handle someone who will actually ask tough questions. And Ms. Goodman has too much integrity to work for the corporate media.

Regards

KO is best when he's "off the leash." Being the host of MTP means being polite in a way that just isn't KO's style. If you want to book guests on that show, they have to like you on some level.
