3. What happens when McCain's support drops down to 39%?
It's going to happen eventually; he's been bouncing around 40% for days, and the law of averages says there's be a statistical dip at some point. But it might become a story in itself.

4. Will the press ignore it?
When Bush was still around that level in approval, they kept saying he was popular. Perhaps they'll just keep saying that Obama has a narrow lead.
