SUMMER ACTION ALERT: Make sure college students fill out absentee ballot forms!
Edited on Mon Jun-16-08 06:41 AM by polichick
We've found in PA that many college students don't realize they need to fill out another absentee ballot form in order to receive ballots for the general election at school ~ the one sent in for the primary will NOT cover it. Here, voter reg forms have to be in by October 6 and absentee ballot forms by October 28 ~ all summer we'll be at festivals and street fairs, and in August we also plan to have people at the Target stores and other places students go to outfit their dorms.

Forms can be picked up at local court houses. I know some of you have been carrying voter reg forms in your cars ~ please add some absentee ballot forms and ask your college friends if they've filled one out yet. THE YOUTH VOTE REALLY MATTERS THIS TIME!!!

I know this type of post is overlooked because it's not drama or glam, but it's the kind that will make the difference this year. So, here's a

11. Cute conjoined twins! I didn't know that the absentee ballot thing...
...could make those who say young voters won't vote right ~ until I met several college students who had no idea they had to fill out another form for the general.

12. Yep, and every vote is so important this time. We need the popular vote to be way above
'no doubt' range. When we went out for dinner yesterday, our server said he hasn't registered yet, he wants to but never has time to go where the registration forms are. I was V-8ing my forehead because we were in my husband's car and I only have forms in mine - well yesterday I only had them in mine!

13. Good for you! Every vote really does count...
Sometimes I wear a button that says "Ask me for a voter reg form." lol Very stylish!

2. My mom always makes sure my brother fills it out while he's home
And then she mails the application for him about a month before the election. But it depends what state students are in. If they live in a state that's not competitive they are better off registering and voting where they go to school. I told my mom when she sees my brother's Penn State friends over the summer make sure they are registered in PA.

4. I hope there are lots of parents like yours...
There's so much to do in Aug. and Sept. with course registration etc., voter reg and absentee ballot deadlines could easily be forgotten.

14. It really depends on what area is competitive
If you're an out of state student, you should register in the state that is competitive (if either is), if neither state is competitve, register in the place with a competitive house, senate, or state level race.

15. I'll be happy if they either register or apply for an absentee ballot by the deadline...
...in ANY state!

6. Some students have local races back at home that they're interested in.
Others are convinced that registering in PA will legally make them PA residents, meaning they'll have to change over their driver's licenses, insurance, etc. This is not the case in PA, but some people can't be convinced otherwise.

But perhaps the biggest reason is that students here are so transient that they move every year and, thus, should technically re-register every year with their new school addresses.

8. Out-of-state students at college in PA could re-register here...
But PA voters away at school who don't want to register in a different state have to fill out absentee ballot forms for each election ~ primary and general. We're trying to catch them while they're home for the summer.
