Who do you think McCain will pick for his VP? Who do you think he should pick?
And by should pick, I mean to make him competitive, not whom you'd love to see him pick to doom him further?

Me:

- I now believe McGetoffmylawn may just pick Joe Lieberman. His campaign is a miserable failure, and he may need to do something "different" to try and get some juice. What better way to combat Obama's pull across party lines, than to actually make a cross party ticket: Republican/Lieberman.
McMacaca will also see the glowing lure of sewing up the Jewish vote and thus, winning Florida, and apparently, New Jersey. Joe already proved he could win both states in 2000.

Their campaign is so poorly run, I think they may just pick Joementum. I hope they do.

- Who I think he should pick is Huckabee. He's a guvnuh, executive experience, yadda, yadda, yadda. McCain doesn't have the traditional base of years past - conservatives and evangelicals. He needs something to reel them in as that is his only shot. He's not going to win the indies, Repubiclans, that are moving to Obama, nor the moderate block of the spectrum, and he's most likely going to suffer harshly from the "base" I mentioned. I also think Huckabee has a personality ("Aww shucks" goes a long way) that will make a dent in the "centrist" bloc that will be going for Obama.

I have faith in the McCain campaign that they'll choose poorly.

What say you, DU?

4. Three possibilities
Edited on Mon Jun-16-08 06:07 PM by DJ13
The first one, Jomentum you already mentioned.

The second might be Condi Rice, if McSame is serious about trying to get some of the disenchanted women voters....think of it as the "I want Hillary vote" play without sacrificing the neocon base.

The third would be Jeb Bush, depending on how far McSame sold his soul to the Bush's to get the chance to run this time.......this would be the "one term & Im out so the Bush family can get back in" play.

13. I think he's backed into a corner
He's going to lose badly, and your 3 options will all just hasten his loss. Condi will further tie him to Bush and Iraq. She also won't do what so many who suggest her think she will do: win the female and African American vote. He also guarantees the racist bloc of the base now votes for Barr.

Bush, um, Bush.

5. He SHOULD pick Newt.
Widely viewed as a true conservative. McDubya has yet to secure his base.

Probably, he will pick Mittens, although Holy Joe wouldn't surprise me.

7. I'm going to say Romney
I think the McCain camp will pick Romeny in an attempt to pick up some voters in New England and in the Northeast. It also seems, to me anyway, that Romney is probably going to be one of the "next in-line" guys on the GOP side. When McCain loses, then Romney gears up for another run in 2012 and could possibly have the inside track after making connections during his V.P. run.

11. I think Romney is one of his worst possible choices
The only valuable thing he adds is fund raising. Aside from that, I think he brings nothing to the ticket, despite what initially comes to mind.

He'll help slightly in Michigan, but I think it will be overwhelmingly blue this year, so it won't matter. He won't add shit in New England, despite his true hometown being Belmont, Ma. The only states he may help in for NE are ME and NH. Again, I think Maine will be too blue to matter. NH is unknown to me at this time. McCain has the rep of being popular there; Romney is assumed to be popular there but he lost NH, and many of the locals of his vacation home hate him. Also, the populous portion of the state gets Boston channels, and Romney's rep is known to them too.

He'll do well for the conservatives, but he'll do poorly with the evangelicals. Some will accept his flip-flops to their positions, but most will not. Many (and not just from this group) will not vote for that ticket because he's a Mormon. He's a really poor choice.

Hopefully, McCain picks him. :D

I think the DEMS are really going to take it this year. I think we probably said that about 2004 but I think this year is going to be different. I hope. :)

8. it's such an interesting question, isn't it?
i mean, you're right, McCorpse is a lousy campaigner. he's creepy, his laugh is creepy, he's mishapen and fugly and he seems to always find a way to say the exact wrong thing to say.

smart money says he needs to pick someone youthful and charismatic. the problem is that will make him look older than he already looks and anyone with charisma will shadow him out. the other problem there is it's hard to find a repuke with charisma....they're all dopey dim bulbs.

so, if he doesn't want to be outshined by his running mate, he has to find someone either older or less charismatic than he is. wow, what an attractive ticket that would be.

romney is creepy and used-car-salesmanlike enough to add to his ticket without making McCorpse look more decrepit and sleazy than he is and yet still excite the braindead GOP base.

hickabee is the other choice that comes to mind. he's folksy and likeable among the fundy crowd, yet he's dull enough to not make McCorpse's speeches look more boring than they already are.

lieberman is surely on the short list. he's ugly enough that he won't make McCorpse look like the crypt keeper when they stand next to each other for photo ops. he's not an old geezer, yet he's bland and creepy.

i think it's gonna be one of those three.

9. I think it'll be McCain/Romney. It probably should be McCain/Crist
Edited on Mon Jun-16-08 06:22 PM by onenote
The one person it won't be, notwithstanding the rampant speculation, is Lieberman. The odds of someone with a generally pro-choice record getting on the repub ticket, especially a ticket headed by a 70 plus year old, is zero. McCain's support within the repub party is shaky as it is. There would be open rebellion at the convention if he tried to shove Lieberman down their throat.

They're not very smart. But they're not that stupid.

14. If he picks Willard, it means he can't raise cash and admits he needs help understanding the economy
If he picks Kay Hutchison, it means he thinks he can swipe Hillary votes.

One is a bold pick; one is a God-don't-let-it-be-a-Goldwater-blowout pick.

I think McBush plays it "safe" and picks Romney and loses big time anyway.

If he picks Kay, I am slightly worried.

That way, he'll pick up the youth vote, the curly red-headed vote and the ignorant white vote.
And the best part is - Carrot Top is one of the few people on earth who is less funny than McCain,
so he won't make him look like a doddering old fool who can't tell a joke to save his life.

27. He should pick Condoleeza Rice
The pros:

- They would steal some of the "historic" thunder from Obama and the resulting media interest that the Democratic candidates enjoyed during the primaries.

- The ticket seriously needs an injection of youth but he can't run the risk of picking somebody who will overshadow him and threaten his alpha dog status.

- It would allow the right to really ratchet up the ugly race baiting while hiding behind their "black friend."

- I think there might be some racist white men who would vote for a black woman in the VP slot before they would vote for a black man as president.

Issues:

- Her epic failures would potentially be an issue but anyone who would vote for McCain isn't going to care about that anyway.

- The fact that she's single would be a huge issue for a Democratic candidate but the media would give her a pass and might even concoct some cutesy "The American President" style stories about it. Some neanderthal RW sexists might actually prefer it since she's not "balancing work and family" or anything like that. It would never in a million years occur to them that she might be gay.

OTOH, if he wants to get a lock on OH, NC, etc. Huckabee's the better choice.
