Obama should wait until just before the convention to select a VP
Why? Because the auditions for the VP spot consist of many senior, intelligent Democrats going on TV and *excoriating* John McCain. Nothing like a little healthy competition to bring out the best in people.

4. Is it better for Obama to select first or last? I could see pros and cons to both...
Hmmmm.

5. good question
I like the idea of selecting last for the element of surprise. If the VP is someone other than Clinton, the media is going to go nuts with their faux shock. The more Obama is on TV, the better.

6. Strategically, last.
It gives him the opportunity to play to his strengths (he's a much better candidate than McCain) and doesn't give the GOP time to pick apart his VP pick.

14. The problem is the GOP convention comes last, so if McCain waits until his convention or just before
Obama will have to go first.

15. I always forget that
Thanks for the reminder. I wonder when McCain will announce. I can't imagine he hasn't made his decision by now.

2. That isn't a bad idea!
Is it necessarily a bad thing if the VP is not selected until early to mid August? I highly doubt he'll wait more than 2-3 weeks from now, though.

3. Heh, good idea
I think that's what "they" call thinking outside the box.

8. Yep. And there needs to be some excitement about the convention
itself. So, if the first time the VP takes the stage officially is at the convention, it'll generate more buzz, too.

9. He should wait as long as possible - do it at the convention.
Give the Republicans something to watch for!

They're scared enough as it is.
There is a growing underground ground swell within the party to replace McCain.
That's how scared they are of Obama.

11. I think it's a great idea. Why not announce at the convention? Can he do that?
at any rate, he should take all the time he needs. The more time he takes the more people will understand the care and thoughtfulness put into the decision. Making a decision too soon would make it look like they were careless.

Let the vetting continue... :)

12. That's what he's doing.
That's why Obama told everyone to "settle down" vis-a-vis his VP pick. He doesn't have to announce a VP pick until the day of the convention floor vote, and that's not till August, and he has not intention of making his pick before then.

13. After the longer than usual primary it is better to have Obama by himself
for a while. The longer he waits to pick VP the better. I hope he at least waits until after McCain picks.
