AP: Sam Nunn for VP? What do we think?
Edited on Thu Jun-19-08 06:37 PM by SlipperySlope
I read this floated by the Associated Press. Bring me up to speed on Nunn, would he be a good choice?

1. A fucking disaster
Sam Nunn comes as close to our version of Dick Cheney as anyone around.

A disgusting, right winger. Plus, a nasty homophobe. He was the one who foisted "DADT" on Bill Clinton. Nunn's record on gay rights is absymal, to put it mildly.

I'll sit this out in November if Sam Nunn is VP. Fuck that.

27. If you believe in the concept that people can change their minds...
Sam Nunn has been quoted recently that he thinks DADT should be revisited - I don't think, if he was the VP candidate, that it would take much for him to move even further towards being in favor of its repeal. He says that he thinks that at the time it was implemented, it was the right thing to do, but that society has changed in the subsequent years.

(Remember, many politicians have changed positions over time, and sometimes they are even sincere about it... Gore's position on abortion, for example.

47. "Revisit" is not the same as repeal.
There are gay and lesbian people who want to serve their country in the military. They want to serve their country as openly gay men and women. Other countries, such as Israel, Canada, Great Britain, Germany allow gay men and lesbians to openly serve in their militaries. DADT is blatant discrimination. And should be repealed now. Not "revisited", not "reconsidered", not "re-examined". Repealed. As a score of retired military officers, including a former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff plus the 39th President of the United States have urged.

49. I completely agree... but
Sam Nunn WAS totally against allowing gays to openly serve in the military. Now he's open for a revisit of the topic. That's a big change in opinion, in my mind at least. If Obama was thinking of picking him for VP, I am assuming the discussion will include, "Sam, as my VP I'm going to need to you support me 100% on policy issues - any problem with that?" If the answer isn't "No problem!", then I'm thinking Obama will pick someone else.

Fuck him. He's the REASON we didn't get the ban lifted in the first place. Revisit my ass. He should be completely out of the question for ANY Democratic ticket going forward.

Edited on Thu Jun-19-08 06:23 PM by Blue-Jay
Everybody likes vanilla, but nobody goes out of their way to get it.

I don't hate Nunn, but he brings no excitement to the ticket that I can see. Why bother?

11. I don't want to sit it out this November.
I really don't. I have voted in every Presidential, every mid term election since I was eligible in 1976. I haven't been dazzled by some of our nominees...I wasn't giddy when I voted for Dukakis in 1988, but I voted for him.

But goddammit, I just can't do this. I just can't vote for Obama/Nunn. I will not vote for that.

Hell, if the Obama campaign thinks that Sam Nunn is desirable in an Obama Adminstration, offer Nunn Defense Secretary. There goes the repeal of DADT if that happens, but at least he won't be Vice President.

62. Says Nunn: It might be time to take another look at ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’
Former Georgia senator Sam Nunn, who helped push through the 1993 “don’t ask, don’t tell” law that established the terms under which gays and lesbians could serve in the U.S. military, said Tuesday that it’s time to review the policy.

“I think 15 years go by on any personnel policy, it’s appropriate to take another look at it — see how it’s working, ask the hard questions, hear from the military. Start with a Pentagon study,” Nunn said.

The former chairman of the Senate Armed Services wouldn’t say whether he personally supported putting an end to the policy. AJC

I still think he'd suck as a VP nominee.

No, Sam, it's not "time to look at it" it's long past time to undo the damage that YOU did in '93. He should just STFU about it, period.
