Obama on campaign finances: He ought to say "I'm not using taxpayer money like John McCain"
That would appeal to the "I hate taxes and government" crowd.

"Why is John McCain, a multi-millionaire with 6 or 7 houses, using YOUR tax dollars to run for President?"

Make his using taxpayer a money a liability.

1. We don't want to undermine publicly funded elections in general.
It's just that with this broken system, this is the only way to successfully counter the 527's.

It's not in our best interests to get voters to think that taxes should not fund elections at all.

3. Well, until they close down the loopholes, public financing is a sham
I'd say at this point he should just go ahead and stick the knife in McCain and twist.

Then propose to overhaul the system completely when in office.

2. That would anger the public campaign financing people,
Which might cause a bit of a rift on the left.

I think his best response is to spout a few platitudes and start talking about something else. Most voters have no idea what they are talking about, anyway. It's a geek topic. Of those who do, I doubt any are going to change their opinions of either candidate over it. The only way he can screw up is to talk too much and risk saying the wrong thing.

5. That's the long and the short of it. They think the taxpayers should pay mcCain to fly all over.
In general, the idea of a publicly financed campaign - if ran like they do in Japan - would be best.

Everyone gets the same dollars and that's it. No extra money, no 527s no RNC commercials.

That would be a perfect system. But without that, there is no reason to take taxpayer money to fund an election. There are tons of other avenues and ways to bypass limits.

Until then, they want a governemnt hand-out to a multi-mllionaire who can run his own campaign. Outrageous!

6. "Public financing" is a bit of a misnomer.
It's not taken from tax money. It's taken from the $3 check-off that's on the 1040 family of IRS forms.

It's public in that it's money that the public donates to a kitty held by the federal government, it's not public in the same way that "public works" are public--taxpayer funded through obligatory tax payments. Obama tried to spin his in the same way--lots of members of the public giving small amounts. The press didn't buy his "frame". However, the 1040-based public financing has strings attached that Obama's money doesn't, so it's a shrewd move, worthy of a Chi-pol.
