Question on the DNC and the Convention
I've Googled a bit - but it looks like the DNC is short $10 mil for the convention. That story is several days old. Have they closed this gap? I would hate to see this historic nomination done on the cheap - especially since Obama's acceptance speech will be made on a very historic day itself.

I've been gone awhile, so I may be late to the party on this - but why aren't the DNC and Obama doing some joint small donor deal to raise the rest of the cash? Is this old news and its over already?

TIA!

1. I think the time to raise the money has passed.
They've had to cancel some welcome parties.

3. More info:

The long and winding fight for the Democratic presidential nomination is giving a fundraising migraine to the Mile High City.

As the host city, Denver must raise $40.6 million by June 16 for the party's Aug. 25-28 convention. This week, the host committee missed its second fundraising deadline, and Mayor John W. Hickenlooper said he believed the drawn-out battle between Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois had distracted potential donors.

Maybe theres another deadline?

4. thanks - this is the article I was just reading -
it says they're only $5 mil short. Hmm.. Also that they did ask Obama to help.

http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_9641936

A volunteer-appreciation party that Williams hoped to hold at the Denver Zoo would have cost $750,000 and wasn't approved, she said, because of the committee's "higher priorities" of funding the transformation of the Pepsi Center into a convention hall.

Her proposal was rejected after the committee missed its March deadline of $28 million by $5 million, Williams said.

<snip>
And by declining public financing, Obama becomes even more reliant on the hundreds of thousands of small donors on his e-mail lists. That fact could weaken any desire on his part to ask those donors to send money to Denver's host committee.

Looks like they just trimmed some extras. I'm really surprised they didn't push this harder. Maybe the DNC prefers a smaller party and more cash to help downticket races - which actually makes more sense. You can throw a pretty good party for $35 mil.

7. lol. You can definitely throw a pretty good party for $35 mil.
:P I'd rather the money be used to actually *win* elections! I mean... parties are great and all... but come on!

5. Better info... this is the one I was looking for:

DNC organizers say they will just keep raising money

(snip)

Monday was the deadline to raise $40.6 million for the DNC, but organizers say they will just keep fundraising.

"What that really means is that we continue to raise money," said Elbra Wedgeworth, former Denver City Councilwoman and president and chair of the DNC host committee.

Gov. Bill Ritter (D-Colorado) told 9NEWS that nearly $30 million has already been raised.
He says he is confident the money will still come in now that the Democratic nominee has been selected.

(snip)

The cash problem already has forced the host committee to cancel 24 welcoming parties and to postpone a media walkthrough of the site, scheduled for next week.

6. Does this mean there won't be an open bar? What's the point of going?

That would be undemocratic.

I think they could get the $10 million made up pretty fast, if they were to promote the cause by getting Dean and Pelosi to be a celebrity couple on "Dancing With the Stars." (First dance suggestion: The Macarena.)
