Obama raises $22 million in May

Obama raises $22 million in May

WASHINGTON - Democrat Barack Obama has reported raising $22 million in May for his presidential campaign, his weakest fundraising month this year. He ended the month with $43 million cash on hand, according to his campaign.

Obama has been the fundraising leader in the presidential contest, but his May totals nearly match Republican rival John McCain's fundraising for the month.

Overall, Obama has raised more than $287 million during the past 17 months. McCain has raised a total of $115 million.

Obama's campaign reported that, of his total cash on hand, nearly $10 million was exclusively for the general election.

3. I had a bad feeeling his fundraising would suck in May

Hence, the complete silence from Camp Obama until now. This is what happens when everyone assumes you don't need money, Just like what happened to the Clinton campaign late in the game.

Hopefully, the Obama campaign will get more aggressive in raising more money from June onwards.

6. Good point. I agree.

I'm pretty sure I didn't donate in May. The primaries were winding down and it was pretty clear to me that Obama would win the nomination, plus I've been holding onto my money so that I could donate towards the GE.

I made my first GE donation yesterday. I'm going to try to give 10 or 20 bucks a week until November.

18. I gave him my May contribution in April.
I didn't see any reason to give him another one for the month... Clinton was not a serious contender at that point and he hadn't yet begun the campaign against McCain.

25. Also, I think Russert hurt his fundraising on May 6
When he brought up the possibility of Obama paying off Clinton's debt. I think that stopped the rush of money that would have otherwise come in when he won the North Carolina primary and came closer than expected in Indiana.

I kind of had a feeling this would happen. The fact that he waited until now to release his fundraising numbers was a pretty good indication.

11. I disagree. Here's why ---
Edited on Fri Jun-20-08 07:43 PM by rhombus
It wouldn't have mattered much if the DNC was pulling its weight financially. As of last month, the RNC had over $50M while the DNC had just $4M. http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/rnc-raised-24.4-million-nrcc-struggle-continues-2008-06-20.html

The McCain-RNC $$$ combo is walloping the Obama-DNC $$$ combo.

Thank God Obama wised up and ditched public financing or he would have been really screwed.

12. He still needs primary money
to use between now and September. Also he can roll his primary funds into his GE account after the convention.

14. Both my husband and I donated in May, but it definitely wasn't as much
as we donated other months. Our donation for June will be smaller as well. We've had a lot of other expenses this month, but we're doing what we can. :-)

23. The trick to greater donations is media hype capped by a final showdown. 5 months is a long time...
Edited on Fri Jun-20-08 09:23 PM by quantass
Without a showdown like primary night i think we all get complacent and donate less. I think heated debates and inspirational speeches of "we're almost there" and "we have X months to go" help rejuvenate & refocus things though. Obama will be fine financially as long as he keeps up with what he's been doing.

24. May was a month with much party tension.
The DNC was being threatened with withholding fundraising. I think people became confused about how the primary would end.

Big donors are not yet on board with Obama and the DNC..many are still with Clinton.

It will take time.
