***MEDIA STRATEGIZING: ACTIVIST THINK TANK***
Edited on Fri Jun-20-08 10:08 PM by WIllo
WE HAVE TO WIN!

We are going to have to be smarter. We are going to have to be tougher. Our game is going to have to be tighter. We are going to be attacked more viciously. We are going to have to respond more rapidly. We are going to have to raise more money. I am going to have to be a better candidate
<snip>
AND WE DON'T HAVE A CHOICE.

We don't have a choice because now, if we screw this up all those people that I've met who really need help they are not going to get help.
<snip>
THE WHOLE COUNTRY IS COUNTING ON YOU TO CHANGE IT FOR THE BETTER.

Those moments don't come around very often. And here you are, five months away from having transformed the country and made history and changed the world.
WE HAVE TO SEIZE IT. Rest up and come back ready to go...and fired up. -- Barack Obama

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnhmByYxEIo

The media, as a whole, is not on our side. This we know.

But, it should not be this way and we can change it!

Can we please start by using this thread, creating others as needed, to discuss:

a) The specific strategies they use against us. The who, how, when, where and why they attack.

b) Our ideas to strike and counterstrike forcefully.

c) Our ideas for keeping them accountable on a regular basis.

d) Turning these ideas into PLANS OF ACTIONS we can implement timely and en masse.

An example of their strategy:
When Obama moves ahead in the polls they call it a tie. When he is well ahead they strike out against him by constantly looping video frames and/or discussing Barack Obama in a negative light. The public is kept unaware of his leads while they work to lower his rating, at which time they will report that he has a problem with X group.

My ideas include:

1) Creating a list of acceptable media: networks, stations, blogs, papers, reporters, anchors, bloggers, etc.

2) Rating those on this list each week based on their coverage and lack of coverage over the past 7 days.

3) Creating and growing public interest in the DU acceptable media list(s) and weekly ratings.

4) Creating a list of advertising contacts (including billboards), PR firms and major advertisers/sponsors.

Ideas of progressive actions toward media not on the acceptable list or that fall off the list:

5) Sending X number of emails citing the specific problems and requested remedies, then;

6) Sending a CEASE AND DESIST 30-day NOTICE OF WARNING, and an ADVISORY NOTICE sent to #4 above, then;

7) Implementing boycott/strike to last no less than 30-days and up to 365 days with NOTICE OF ACTIVE BOYCOTT/STRIKE sent to #4 above.

Let's discuss these ideas and others that you add. We will need writers for form letters, lists created and maintained. Maybe even charts, graphs and numbers crunched. News watchers and clippers.

LET'S DU THIS!

For the record, I am good with number crunching....statistics and histograms.

If you can send me the data, I can make it pretty and easy to understand.

3. That's what we have to do. The media is McCain's base,
and those who think otherwise will know it soon enough.

Here's a perfect tool to get email addresses and a capability to send 5 letters at a time to any publication in the US. With copyin and pasting action, one can easily send 50 letters in just a few minutes.

http://www.congress.org/congressorg/dbq/media/

This tool can also be used to write to congress.

Just put in a state and it will provide the email addresses and phone numbers of any and all publication in that state.

Enter the last name of a reporter, and again, it will provide the full information required, including phone numbers.

-------------

What we need are numbers. A lot of letters.

If Hillary Clinton could get a Reporter suspended for an entire week, I believe that we could have impact too.

Just that DUers have to want to participate.

9. This is great!
I did a quick hit by zip code then by state and the list was amazing.

I have been creating an email list to quickly address an issue. This is a good source of contacts.

Its late but I'm going to kick this around through tomorrow.

Hopefully we'll attract enough interest, then specifics to be a force.

For where it may be of worth, I'm good at putting together and maintaining contact databases.

11. Yes, it is an amazing tool.
Edited on Fri Jun-20-08 11:05 PM by FrenchieCat
Did you see how you can select 5 sources to address at a time? And then do it over and over again? simply by copying the letter and pasting it once you've sent it the first time?

Also, put in the last name of a reporter, and if he/she has a home, you will get a listing of all of the reporters with that last name.

Also, here are Media watchdog groups. These are a good group to copy letters to. They actually will do follow ups, use it in their media tracking, etc....

17. there has been alot of threads in the past that people posted giving numbers and addressess..
perhaps they can all be rounded up into one forum so people know where to look? You know like the ones given up top by Skinner that stay for a long time and never fall below the radar?

20. I think that we will have to lobby for a DU Election Writer's group.....
I think we need like 10 Donating DUers to agree that they want that kind of a forum.

There is an activist forum now, but it is rarely used.

The problem of course, with having a separate forum, is if no one comes to it....then we end up being alone...which is not the point.

Too many folks are great writers here at DU to waste such resource. We could make a difference if our voices would speak in numbers.

We can't get change if we stay the same.

29. Your right about so many great writers....perhaps taking the best journals and sharing them
in just that one forum for people to look through, printing them out, sharing them not only with family and friends but perfect strangers..but never forgetting to also give out the information on what they themselves can do to help...people really need a leader, they need someone to do most of the work, its the way it is,, I used to be much more active, and nine times out of ten, it was me alone organizing things for not just my children but others as well...what I have been most active in was my childrens lives...but they are older now...I do have more time than I once had....

10. Well just so you know, you have put a bee in my bonnet this evening...as with most
citizens these days I too find myself bogged down in my life, not so much mine but my families, I have grandchildren, a very demanding spouse and really to be honest have at the moment little time for much else which is why when I do get on here it is so far and few between..

I for one am tired of my husband telling me that I don't have any power to change things...I want to have that Frenchie, not for me, really doesn't matter at this point but for my children and grandchildren as well as yours and others who come after us...

There are many things I can find the time for even if it is simply writing a letter and printing it out in multiples and sending them out in the mail, I don't really think email does all that well because its very easy to delete you know?

If enough people sent real letters, thousands of them daily, don't you think they would have to take notice? its not so easy to delete real mail..

12. I think that if DUers can't be bothered to write letters......
when they can sit up here and type stuff on DU all day long, why would ordinary folks do much more?

I think sometimes that some DUers think that someone else is gonna do the heavy lifting, while they continue to sing to the choir (ok, I"m also guilty of this) or bicker with the choir.

I do a lot of writing to various offenders and such though....cause I understand the power of the pen. It has yielded results quite a few times.

Since then your activist spirit has been a constant inspiration.

Especially tonight when on an earlier thread you were rarin' to go.

People here are ready. I hear the grumblings in almost every thread.

I'm not a leader...you are. I have ideas and a hell of a lot of fight.

There are all types on DU...leaders, strategistics, writers, and doers.

Let's make this push a serious one. See if together we can fine tune some actions and get to work.

Remember: We Must Win and Yes We Can!

its inevitable, its about the money, always has been, hit them where it hurts, but can you ensure they feel the pinch of lost viewers? I for one have pretty much given up on them..if I want to find out whats happening in the world I watch the texas news channel for a short time, more times than naught if the kids and husband don't make a fuss I have cspan on...I want to hear what is going on for myself, I don't trust them to tell me...everyone should realize that the truth of what is happening on capital hill cannot be found by watching any msm..

16. You know, alot of what you are saying does not require money, I think far too many
people simply don't' have the funds to do much more than perhaps writing letters, email, though I still think letters in the mail to be more vocal but the truth is that also can cost quite a bundle..so for some email would have to do but if maybe they can take even one hour out of every day to perhaps make calls, leave messages, write one email and simply cut and paste the same letter to as many people as one could send to at one time, doesn't seem to take too much time, but I do believe that organized protests will surely help the people driving around to and from wherever they are going, signs, leaflets, you know, the only organized thing I saw in my town in the last five years was a group of people for Ron Paul and a few ignorant souls wasting time holding signs against abortion, thats it, nothing else at all and I live in a huge town....pretty pathetic, you would think everything was just peachy keen....

24. I agree. The saying was a letter is worth a thousand phone calls.
I think email is somewhere between the two. The key is exposure. A phone call was quick and at that time not trackable. A letter is hard proof of what many are thinking.

Emails and phone calls are good while distributing copies of the email/letter on message boards, blogs and in neighborhoods is equivalent to a mailed letter.

We need to be able to address various groups on the same issue--

1. Friendly media - Those would be bloggers with high visibility website who are progressive. So I'm talking about folks like TPM, The prospect, the Observer, Countdown, (Kos as well can be effective), etc...

Also Friendly Radio talk show personalities, i.e., Randi Rhodes, Ed schulz, Stephanie Miller, etc...

They can get the word out on a particular issue faster than anyone else.

2. Copying Media Watchdog groups such as those that I listed an above post, to let them know what is going on, i.e., providing "tips".

3. Writing to offending media cable sources, i.e., CNN, MSNBC, and Fox.

4. Submitting LTTE to the periodicals like Newsweek, Times, etc...

5. Writing to local media press in purple states as well as national print media, i.e., NYT, WAPO, Etc...

6. Responding with calls and emails to RW talk shows and C-Span.

7. Writing to these "new" MSM sites like Politico and the Fix (they are the biggest offenders of them all after cable).

8. Writing to national network news pointing out their offenses, i.e., ABC, NBC and CBS.

9. Writing to sponsors of offending shows.

gave the information out to others that don't visit Du, it could snowball into an avenue never before realized since they have taken over, we still have that power, but it won't last much longer, I really believe that..in other countries you see thousands of people jamming the streets in protest of their governments mishandling of its duties, not here, not in America, why is that?

50. There is still hope.
It's a psychological fact that if you hear something repeated often enough, even when you know it's not true, you will start to believe it. I can't remember the exact name of this process from my sociology classes, but it has to do with the fact that we can't hear or say something that's opposite of what we know or believe too long without starting to believe it ourselves because we really don't like the dissonance it would create within us.

However, there is still time to turn things around. It should be interesting to see what happens to Fox, Limbaugh, et al during the 8 years of President Obama. I wonder who will survive?

Thanks to us.

However, we don't have a force strong enough to move them yet. So they simply apologize.

I think if we have to let all the media know they are being watched. That includes Fox.

Acceptable media would be the ones we all have decided are appropriate for fair and accurate news. The weight of that list alone is based on how much exposure we can give it.

Having that exposure and not being on the list is a negative hit to that particular media. Without one letter or email having been sent.

as a chess player, which is strategy at is finest, you do not let the other side know what you are thinking or planning or what pieces you will be placing where. so i would suggest a password protected area outside of DU to use for working the strategy against the propaganda. discussing this in the open simply let's the other side be prepared or worse, pre-empt you. off-radar is my suggestion.

47. Good advice but sad too you know? don't we all in this country want what is best
of us all as a whole? Wasn't this country founded at one time because people did NOT like the government or leaders to decide every single aspect of it's citizens lives? When did people forget that this country is basically a melting pot, one that houses so many individuals that it ensures great minds are allowed to grow, ideas to merge upon the thoughts of people of all races, ages and classes?

I just don't understand how some believe a controlling government could be in any way good for our future, history proves such does not ensure fairness and equality for all...

53. I understand but I don't totally agree and here's why.
I see it as the people vs the current media. We have to get to whom they've gotten to. How can we do that in secrecy? What more can the media do that they haven't tried already? Remember, we know the internet, the streets and neighborhoods better than they do.

The media needs to know a fight is coming. There are some in the media who want it different as well. It could spur them in their fights. And, how is it different than planning a rally, strike or boycott?

We at least need a public area to get started otherwise it sputters and dies with the few who know about it. Like many of the forums I looked into.

There are two ways this can go, totally public or semi-public. Then the question becomes which parts are which?

41. A question.....why should I see my fellow country man as enemy?
I mean, I read your input then I thought about it, I mean I live and have been married for thirty years to a full blow die hard conservative republican....my kids are half and half...;-) and I don't see them as enemies?

We have managed to live together all these years, we are all in the same boat, even our politicians whether they realize it or not. We need each other, we don't have to like each other or agree one hundred percent of the time, but we do need each other..

Maybe too many people forget that.

A yahoo group at the least.....a password website as the ideal.

51. Excellent plan.
And yahoo group would allow e-mails between all members of the group.

55. Absolutely.
No trolls allowed.

If it's a DU based group, that would be easier to do - have those interested in joining PM with their e-mail address. That way it could be based on their history here - and anyone that is "iffy" could be put on hold until they are better known (e.g., they could be told that there are a lot of members now and registration is suspended, but may be completed at a later date as needed).

57. right...
the only thing is, however, i cannot be a part of it... despite wanting to. otherwise my reporting will be seen as part of the strategy and i don't want that... but really support your idea of taking big media on:)

52. ;-) But I don't want to see them as an opponent persay, I personaly
would like them to quit finding ways to simply fight people that believe differently than they do, don't get upset, I know your a very busy person and don't wish to annoy you...but we need everyone...we just need them to open their minds as well as their hearts and quit seeing anyone who disagrees with them an enemy...

With all the natural disasters we are being faced with these days, I would hope that people realize that the person next to them, though considered an opponent by some still in all honesty desires the same thing that they do, just a simple happy life, a need to know that you can count on your neighbor even if you have on your lawn a different candidate sign come election time...

I'm angry, but seriously, what in the world are they angry at? I really need to understand and I don't, I want equality, thats all, I don't have to like you, nor you me, but I would hope that you would wish for me the same things you would wish for yourself...

I guess for me, its time to find a way to heal the hurt the politicians have made us all feel along with the complicit media outlets....we the citizens. we the ones they could not survive without, I think they have forgotten that...and its time we all get together and remind them..

Just my thoughts..sorry if it sounds stupid.
