Possum Hunters for Obama! Reaching out to Appalachia
Edited on Sat Jun-21-08 03:39 AM by Dems to Win
It's smart of Obama to include a mention of possums on his seal. :7

Folks in Appalachia, and other rural areas, enjoy a good pot of possum stew. And they are always looking for a good recipe. All the candidates have cookie recipes, but only Obama thinks of the possum hunters. :9

Vero Possumus (spicy possum stew)

One possum, skinned, gutted, and cleaned
4 TB chili powder
4 potatoes, cut into chunks
2 carrots, sliced
1 can peas
3 qts water
Salt and pepper to taste

Boil the possum until skin easily falls away from the bones; remove from the pot. De-bone and cut meat into bite sized pieces; return to the pot, into the newly-made stock. Add the potatoes, carrots, and peas. Simmer until carrots and peas are soft. Serve with white bread.

2. Nothing like making fun of the poor and disadvantaged
to give a person that extra edge, make you feel bigger, stronger, and better, and jump start the day?
:sarcasm:

4. I ate possum stew as a child. The OP was intended to be light-hearted.

Also squirrel, rabbit, quail, and venison. In Oklahoma. Not Appalachia, but close enough.

6. I've eaten all that except possum.
Edited on Sat Jun-21-08 05:03 AM by Lasher
In addition I've eaten groundhog, bear, wild boar, ruffed grouse, rattlesnake, wild turkey, & raccoon. Also elk, carribou, alligator, and rocky mountain oysters, but none of these are available locally.

I once tried something in Seoul, Korea that I'm not sure about because I was afraid to ask what it was.

Some people around here have eaten possum but none more recent than about 80 years ago as far as I know. Might try it some day.

3. Ha.
I also thought that looked a little odd. The latin is correct but surely they could have found another way to say it.

Recipe sounds tasty!

5. I've always favored roasted hedgehog myself
All you do is roll the little critters up in mud, and roast 'em on an open fire. Pull the mud away when they're cooked, and the quills come off in the hardened mud. Delicious eating!

7. I don't understand the point of your post.
I live in Appalachia. While some here might eat raccoon, I don't know any that eat possum. Deer, beaver and squirrel are considered excellent, and rightly so.

Not in this kind of context in this setting.
