3. I don't consider myself an "Obama supporter"
He was always my second to least favorite during the primaries, and that hasn't really changed. I'll certainly vote for him, but I'm not going to donate or hang a bumper sticker or anything.

I will, however, be working my ass off to get Darcy Burner elected to the WA-8th instead of Dave Reichert. Local races are more fun anyway.

between McCain being elected (or, being able to steal the election), and Obama being president...

would you do it?

4. My support is diminishing
due to his announcement of tepid support for FISA, then his apparent walking-back from that. I will reserve harsh judgment based on his vote next week, as well as his support for, or lack thereof, Dodd's filibuster (who similarly has disappointed me with the details of his Countrywide favor-collecting).

I don't like the way he's playing both sides of the fence on NAFTA, either.

No way I won't vote for him, but he loses lots in the way of financial and shoe-leather and cell-phone minute support from me.

Obama will take care of the FISA issue once in the WH - but he must get there first or all is lost.

5. He was not my first choice. But I support him now.
At this moment, my support is predicated more on not wanting McCain, but I'm sure I'll get enthusiastic about this soon enough. It was just the same scenario as Edwards and Kerry in 2004. I was a Dean person, then Edwards... then when Kerry got in, I had to find a way to like him and get excited about his nomination. I'm in that process now with Obama. I made an Obama "mii" on my wii system, and then a McCranky, and that helps a lot! lol.

but with his recent statements in support of the FISA legislation, I not have real doubts about the depth and sincerity of that "change". Seems like political double speak to me...once again.

13. I'm more positive - there seems to be more to him than slogans.
My biggest problem with Obama has been his tendency to retreat into sloganeering - waffling about "hope vs fear" and "change we can believe in", which may sound grand but don't actually mean anything - but he increasingly appears to have substance underneath the fluffy rhetoric.

14. I wish you had put this poll up yesterday morning. I still staunchly support
but FISA was a kick in the guts and I need a breather. It's not so much ONE vote, it's what vote it is and yet another craven capitulation by the majority of the Party. I watched Pelosi lying through her teeth this morning and realized what millstones they're going to be around his neck until we get them out so he can work with a Congress that represents us instead of corporations.

I'm done with the hope part and moved to CHANGE. He said we're the change we want to see right? Well let's get cracking and see how much we're going to be able to change. I'm still fired up for change albeit a little deflated but I know that, now more than ever, is the time to stick by him and make our voices heard giving him the support he needs to do the right thing, even if some of it might boil down to tough love for a week.

22. I support him now
but that is because he is the only one left standing. I was never a big supporter of Obama. Not that I have anything against him or anything. I did not support him because I did not feel he could win right now. Too new, not truly vetted. The "too inexperienced" part about him. He has made too many rookie mistakes. I think that in 4 years he will be unstoppable, but as this time I think too many obstacles are going to be thrown up against him. He managed to beat Hillary for the domination but looked terrible with the weak finish. I will support him now and try my damnest to do what is necessary to defeat McCain but I am ressigned that it may not happen at this time. That is why I supported others before he got the nomination. Now, he is our candidate and we have to work hard to get a win through for him.

who supported someone else before Obama became the nominee? He has my full support and I will even send money that I was sending elsewhere. Until he became the nominee, I supported who in my opinion could win then. I am not leaving the party in disgust as others are threatening to do.

23. I didn't support him in the primaries
I'm trying to warm up to him.

I'd like to hope, but I'm very cynical. If there is an election, and if he wins, I will be happy if he turns out to be not just another politician. It's difficult, if not impossible in this empire, to attain that level of power without selling out to the corporate interests whose only desire is to squeeze as much profit from this planet as they can.

I don't expect the empire to make a sea change, but a start to shifting to the left would be good. It's a long way, just to get back to something can could be adequately called a center.

instead of another Clinton style sell out, but oh well. The writing was on the wall about that back in 2005.

Still, it's sad to see.

How anyone could have come out and supported the roll over and play dead to Bush and the Republicans on FISA at this stage is well beyond even what Krugman warned us of.

31. I'm not even paying attention
It's all about electing D and not R in November. We've identified our D so none of this sidelight nonsense means a thing. I'm scanning these threads and reading about recent issue positions that I didn't know existed.

Obama was never as pure and perfect as his most loyal blind folded supporters wanted to pretend. Plus, an upstart nominee comes attached with vulnerabilities and disappointments, things that don't surface until the ferocity of the primary battle wears off.

Same thing once he beats McCain. Obama will likely struggle early in his administration and the masked weaknesses will show up, leading to flurries of threads here. In the long run it doesn't matter at all. Get a D in the White House and everything will tilt positive over a 4 year and 8 year period.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention: it's a 53-47 environment at base level. That's partially why I'm not paying much attention. At 50/50 climate I'd be dreading every rookie bobble. Margin for error is nice. :)

33. I am a pragmatic realist, winning is Job1, between now & Nov. are perilous times for a Senator ...
running to be POTUS. He is but 1 of 100 Senators in a gov't that has 3 coequal brances and requires a minimum of 60 votes in the Senate to override a veto.

I put blame where it belongs, Bush & the Republicans.

36. He won me over during the primary
We need Omama....Without him we have 4 more years of Bush via McCain who can survive that long...I know my family can't. Obamas heart is in the right place, not everything he will do will please me..but nothing McCain will do, will help my family. At least with Obama we have a fighting chance. I really don't like the way many jump on one issue...and post their grievances against Obama you all need to remember for many Americans Obama will be our last chance...Possibly if he was your last chance you might view him differently.

Edited on Sun Jun-22-08 12:44 PM by Phoonzang
Not because of the FISA thing like a lot of people (it's politics and I care more about winning in Nov), but because of stupid mistakes he's been making with his campaign. The most recent one is that awful new presidential seal which is going to come back to bite him in the ass later. He keeps saying things he shouldn't as well. Like mentioning that the GOP will attack him based on his race. Sure they will, but being a black candidate, he should go out of his way not to mention it. There's a double standard and he'll be accused of playing the race card (and already has). I thought this election was going to be a slam dunk, but it seems the Obama campaign is going to make sure that it isn't.

Not like I'm going to vote for McCain over him though. I'm just less enthusiastic.

Of course I'll vote for him, but I haven't been moved to donate any of my hard-earned cash. That's going to my House candidate. I still have certain reservations about Obama -- it's not personal, I just generally don't trust most politicians.
