Not over for Obama on FISA
Edited on Sun Jun-22-08 08:00 AM by johnlal
A lot of people on this site are upset about Obama's support for the FISA amendment bill. Yes, he did something stupid when he issued a statement in support of the bill. But he hasn't voted on it yet, and he did pledge to try to strip telecom immunity from the bill. A lot of us are upset with him because of his stupid misstatement. But this can be fixed.
Obama needs to come forward and say he misspoke when he supported the bill. He should say that on further review, the bill is a bad one and doesn't have his support. Then, he needs to go to the Senate chamber and grab Harry Reid and drag him to a corner of the room for a little discussion (the way he did with Lieberman), and he needs to say--"You need to be behind me in the General Election. This Fisa Issue is killing me with my base. Delay it. Don't let it come to the floor. If it does come to the floor, it needs to be amended (gutted). Telecom immunity is not acceptable". Then he needs to go to Pelosi's office and make sure she's on the same page from here on out.

If he's unwilling to do that, we will know a lot about him going forward.

To all the people who have posted to tell us to shut up about this issue, relax. I don't imagine Obama will lose too many votes from people who visit this site. He deserves the criticism he's getting for supporting a disasterous bill. On the other hand, it really doesn't help that a lot of people are posting to apologize for him or to excuse what he said.

1. I am told that he will vote for it.
He will offer an amendment to try to strip teleco immunity. His amendment will fail, and he will vote for FISA.

2. One important thing to remember is
that Obama opted out of public financing. That move gives his supporters, who now represent his entire avenue for raising campaign cash, tremendous power. Believe me, if his daily donations immediately DRY UP between now and his Senate Vote on FISA, it may help him to see the bill in a different light. Obama said before "WE HAVE THE POWER"; he gave it to us, so let's exercise that power. The power of persuasion is $$$.

3. I doubt that a few pissed off bloggers will effect his financing. Dream on. nt

4. I'm glad to hear he doesn't need us.
That takes the pressure off.
