Poll: Most White Voters Comfortable With Black President

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

The WashPost/ABC poll finds nearly 90 percent of whites would be comfortable with a black president, with about two-thirds being “entirely comfortable.”

Approval is much lower for someone entering the White House at 72.

1. Of course we would
It's just those backwards rural whites who even have an inkling of an issue with it.

And "rural" is everywhere.

3. Thanks for putting "rural" in context
I've met racists living in big cities as well as the country.

6. Fortunately, by definition rural = sparsely populated ...
hence not as many votes at stake. I would imagine many of the folks in question went GOP a long time ago.

I look at this being a landslide of historic proportions. If Senator Obama can pull off a victory on the order of magnitude shown by the latest Newsweek poll, you could be looking at a huge house majority combined with a fillibuster-proof Senate majority. 8 years of such an arrangement will be a minimum requirement to reverse the damage done to this country after 8 years of Chimpy & Evil Dick.

I wish the election were tomorrow.

9. That was my point
For all the talk of Obama having trouble with white, rural voters, you'd think there were tons of these people.

There's not.

Most people - of any color - live in or around large cities.

That's why a Democrat can win with a map like this:

11. Looks good to me ...
and I saw a poll this a.m. showing GA to be moving toward Obama (1-pt lead for gramps in a normally solid GOP state).

Look at the ad buys that Obama is making right now... mostly in red states that he wants to put into play. This could be the biggest Democratic presidential victory since 1964.

2. I think that is because
as a person gets older, they are prone to many more health risks. And the Presidency is probably the most stressful job anyone can have; history has shown us how it takes a toll on a person's health (look at FDR, for example). Whereas the tone of one's skin has nothing to do with one's fitness for office.

13. We've had black governors, USNA super, head of subs Atlantic Fleet, Chair of JCS...
head coaches of football and baseball teams, etc.

There are a lot of examples of black men in leadership and authority positions.

Women just are still not trusted to host a game show, a late night talk show, a Sunday morning news/chat show or to be a spokesman for a financial institution on television.
