My first memories are JFK-Nixon in 1960.

My first work was for Gene McCarthy in 1968.

My first presidential vote was for George McGovern in 1972 (still my best).

People I loved who loved this country and fought for it saw George W. Bush's evil before I did.

And they - they who grew up with FDR - died during this corrupt asshole's term. They are gone.

You and I are not. I have never been so pissed off and committed in my life. In their memory, and for my grown daughter's sake, I will leave no stone unturned in my relentless push to have Barack Obama elected as the 44th president of the United States.

I am puking tired of the if-and-or-he-is-not-perfect crowd.

Anybody who thinks otherwise than Barack Obama for president here at DU better bring it. I am no longer backing off, or apologetic.

Barack Obama for President. Or get the hell out of here, and out of my way. People I loved who were a whole lot tougher than those fucking bikers for Bush would have it no other way. I owe them.

We all do. No time for timidity. Let's elect him.

I have done that benefit-of-the-doubt crap for 40 years.

Not this time. Nuke the bastards.

Thanks for being with me. This is OUR country. Time to take it back. I'm on your team, too.

6. Perfectly said, my dear faygokid!
I'm with you on this one...

I remember Eisenhower and all the rest...

I thought he was stupid at the time...

How wrong I was!

Would that more people had heeded his warnings against the military-industrial complex...

Maybe, just maybe, things might not be as bad as they are now!

Now it's time to kick ass and take names...

No mercy!

No backing down!

Can you imagine Ike and Gen. Marshall in the same room with the neocon slime?

Neither can I. But I bet Cheney's sphincter tightens at the thought.

8. My earliest memories...
... are of MLK's funeral, and my dad yelling "They killed Bobby Kennedy!" shortly after that, mom, who was a delegate for McCarthy, got arrested in Chicago in 1968.

I remember being shocked as a child hearing on the news "only ten of our boys were killed in Vietnam today." When you're five years old, ten sounds like a lot.

I went home for lunch every day in the 6th grade and watched the Watergate hearings.

I was too young, by two weeks, to vote against Reagan the first time.

Never in my adult life have I felt as good about a candidate as I do about Senator Obama.

He's not perfect, but then who on this planet is? He's not a savior, he's a politician and he will make mistakes. That's OK.

He's going to get elected, and then we have to clean the right-wing scum out of our house. We can make this once-great nation great again...

We may not recover from Bush. Historians are nearly unanimous in assessing his damage.

But we have to try. I am older than you, but we love this country, with all its many faults.

See you at Barack's inauguration. I hope.

33. Two Weeks too Young
Me too. I was so ticked...I'd just moved to California that summer and heard so much bad about him from his Governor days. I go by faces and both Reagan and Bush II gave me that 'evil is wrought by want of thought as well as want of heart' feeling. I was pleased to vote against both of them and only wish more of America had seen the truth early. How much misery would we all have been spared.

9. I'm in full agreement
After the thrashing we've taken from the republican pigs for so many years and the fact that we either stand and vote for Obama or we get 4 to 8 years of McSame I am fed up with people whining about this issue and that issue and threatening to stop supporting Obama. It really is as simple as that. I'm all for debate and argument and holding any and all candidates to their word - but goddammit we need to defeat the republican fascists NOW.

12. Very good Faygokid, golden oldie here too
Got to vote for JFK. Hell, I thought it was easy back then backing a winner. It took me years of voting the wrong way for the wrong reason before I realized that just because you think someone has your best interest a heart you could be real wrong thinking. It was hard to believe that what some repubs said was pure BS. Reagan for one; I hated Johnson for Viet Nam so voted Nixon and believed he would get us out honorable, head hanging now in shame, and Reagan because Carter seemed unable to control what happened in Iran. Actually Reagan was working behind Carter's back to get the hostages released after he was in office (right after the swearing in of Reagan, to be exact) so he would get elected, talk about dirty politics.

Today there is no way I'd vote for any repub., but years ago they did have a way of conning the people into thinking they liked small govt., right(?), they meant no help for those that are less fortunate, but little did I realize how they loved big business.

There used to be decent GOPers. I think of Ike and Gerald Ford. But they would have no place in today's GOP.

If you can, go online and order for a few bucks the HBO movie about LBJ and Vietnam. It's incredible.

Thanks for your post, my friend. Yes We Can.

24. Here's the thing, when you are young and trying to make a living
and raising kids you don't have much time to read books and the back pages of the newspapers, at least back in our days. Fifteen minutes of world news and PBS was helpful years ago. My best friend was a political junkie most of her adult life and she tried to clue me in on the repubs I was voting for. She had all the watergate books, gulf of Tonkin, etc..

The young people now are running as fast as they can just to either pay their bills or get an education and then pay those enormous debts due to the high cost of college. So it's hard to blame some people for not knowing what is going on in politics. Now that most are feeling it in the pockets they are now getting a clue, like oh yea, that war is costing us way to much, what the hell is going on?? Now to clue them in on our rights that have been lost. Wait until they try to get relief in court and then they will find out how few rights they have left.

Apparently the younger voters are noticing what Barack has to say, oh yea.

14. Abso-damn-lutely ... FDR wasn't a "sure thing" when elected ...
I think we're already ahead with Obama. He's good basic
material, and perhaps he's just doing what he has to in
order to WIN (remember, the whole game is "LET'S WIN,
BABY!"). Even if he shifts toward the center, we're
starting with a candidate who is more progressive than
any since McGovern ... and if he has to do what is neces-
sary to win, WHO CARES? I truly belive that, unlike
Clinton, Obama will NOT throw the left wing of the party
under the bus if elected; he will "dance with the one
that brung him" including the 1.5 million donors to his
campaign (many of whom post on this board).

My ex-in laws died in 2005, after 60 years of marriage. They died within four days of each other. I miss them every day. He was a powerful voice in Miohigan against the Vietnam war.

Mom raised two sons alone in the 1950s, and was the first U.S. woman to win the War Production Board award. in 1943. In fact, Eleanor Roosevelt flew to Detroit just to congratulate her, and it was HUGE in the papers and on the radio.

She died in 2003, at 85. We have a responsibility here.

Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 07:28 AM by Triana
...he's going to support things and people and vote in ways we don't ALWAYS approve of. HE WILL disappoint us.

HE'S JUST A MAN. And he's a POLITICIAN.

BUT YOU TELL ME - ANYONE TELL ME - WHAT is the alternative right now?

RIGHT NOW - what is the alternative? What do you suggest. Folks, we do not have TIME to diddle around here. SUPPORT THE NOMINEE or go AWAY - because this country and this WORLD cannot abide another 4-8 years of DISASTEROUS policy like the past 8 - and I ask again - WHAT is the alternative RIGHT NOW?

And you know, I AGREE with faygokid - It is TIME to take the GOP to the damned curb for trash pickup - and this is the FIRST time in our lives we've even HAD a candidate like this - and we're going to BLOW IT!?

ARE WE?

Eye on the prize - eye on November - and DON'T get distracted - IF you want Obama to be elected - faults, warts and ALL. If not - well maybe ya don't belong on DU. IF NOT - then YOU figure out an alternative. And don't wast ANY time about it - because we HAVE TO WIN in November. 2008.

He has my vote. I think it's going to be a far tougher fight then you think it will be.

Just because you think he is the best thing since sliced bread, you should realize most people do not.

What we need is for a vast majority to see him as far better then McCain.

Note: perhaps I read your post wrong, but it seemed awfully combative towards those of us who will vote for him, but have far less passion and affection for him then you do. I hope I was just reading it wrong. maybe you could clarify.

40. Enthusiastic K&R - Obama is the best chance we have for a liberal president and
2008 is the best chance we have to elect him. I tend to like to keep to myself and avoid the world, but not this year. This year even I am making phone calls and going door to door. 9-11 absolutely stunned me, and I would not be the least bit surprised if GWB was 100% behind it. We need a radical change of course NOW. Our futures, but more imporantly, our children's futures depend upon it. I'm not a one-issue voter, and I won't condemn on one issue. Onward with electing Barack - our best chance for a decent future.
