As reality slowly creeps up on them, their eyes widen and you can see the panic hidden beneath the veneer. They read the new polls from Newsweek and other pollsters and they see their candidate sliding farther and farther behind and they see the former Republican, now a Libertarian, Bob Barr, taking votes away from their candidate also, and they become outwardly nervous at the prospects this fall.
Even their heroes like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity can do nothing to save them. They made their bed with George W Bush and Dick Cheney and now they are going to have to sleep in it. As in most recent elections, some still believe they will find a way to win it at the end. The negative witch-hunters will find something with which to destroy the Democratic nominee, Barack Obama. Some are still optimistic.
However, the majority of their Party are depressed and demoralized. They have troubled consciences about the way our Constitution has been ignored and how their leaders have tortured people in their names and they have managed to rationalize it all up to now. Enter John McCain.
They never cared for John McCain anyway. He is just a sacrificial lamb. An a very old lamb at that. They are mostly worried about the House and Senate and races down the ticket. They worry that a landslide will bury them so deeply that they will not be able to see the light of day for several election cycles.
It is sad that they followed fools and are now lost in the wilderness of Reagan's promise. Surely someone will ride by on a white horse and show them the way home? :-)
