NY Times editor rips Dowd's "relentless gender-laden assault" against Clinton
Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 07:12 PM by Truthfulone
You have heard little of this, of course, because the media has no interesting in telling you that one of their kind screwed up badly.

Clark Hoyt, New York Times public editor, reviewed Dowd's work and in a column yesterday, he concluded:

“I’ve been twisting gender stereotypes around for 24 years,” Dowd responded. She said nobody had objected to her use of similar images about men over seven presidential campaigns. She often refers to Barack Obama as “Obambi” and has said he has a “feminine” management style. But the relentless nature of her gender-laden assault on Clinton — in 28 of 44 columns since Jan. 1 — left many readers with the strong feeling that an impermissible line had been crossed, even though, as Dowd noted, she is a columnist who is paid not to be objective.

And there's more:

Aulisio, the reader who wanted a review of Times coverage, asked if a man could have gotten away with writing what Dowd wrote. Rosenthal said that if the man had written everything Dowd had written over the years and established himself as a sardonic commentator on the sexes, “I’d say the answer is yes.”

Of course, there is no such man, and I do not think another one could have used Dowd’s language. Even she, I think, by assailing Clinton in gender-heavy terms in column after column, went over the top this election season.

That's not all. Dowd was caught lying when she told Hoyt that she had never been criticized for gender-trashing males, such as Gore, Obama, etc.

Today Media Matters calls this idiot on her lie:

1. Someone was expecting journalism out of the Times' yearbook editor?
Dowd has been a disgrace for years. Why are we surprised by this?

14. Do you know what his schedule is like? I do, and I believe him.
If Howard were to say he gets more than 5 hours' sleep a night, THEN I'd
start to think he was trying to pull the wool over my eyes, but I'd be
amazed if he had the time to watch anything. He may have an aide or two
tell him about something, and then watch a selected podcast, but he is
tireless, especially now. Bush has the time to watch Fox all the time, but
Howard really works for a living.

19. Do you know what folks were interviewed and appeared on Matthews' show?
Howard watched. Or was told what kind of play the DNC got on those shows. It's his job.

He doesn't do it recreationally.

As Kathleen Hall Jamieson said, not a lot of people watch those shows, but all the folks that count do.

23. I don't get US TV here, so I don't follow that stuff.
Howard has been over here since Sunday, so he had to have left Saturday night.
Considering what he has been up to, I doubt watching reruns of US TV shows has
been first and foremost on his "to do" list.

16. It's very relevant
In putting to bed some of the past.

And now...on to victory. Secure in the knowledge that yes, indeed, sexism and misogyny played a role and yes, we do not deny the fact. It will again. Along with all the ugly aspects of our society.

let's have no more nonsense that sexism was a big player. And on this board too. And of course there were many, many other factors. How importantly each weighed is a matter for time and fair judgment.

And sexism (and racism) are fully in play in the presidential campaign.

Want a nice home baked cookie? A new frock?

28. Hi Jo. That was a pretty good post. :)
I have to say I've never cared for Dowd. I especially disliked her back in the 1990s.

But, I'm not sure this puts anything to bed. Rather, I believe it stirs shit up again. And we have enough on our plate for the GE without continuing the primary wars. That's just my opinion, of course, and I repect your opinion, too.

36. Thanks - and I agree on the primary wars
That said - I don't think it helps to ignore the past. We have to find a place to incorporate it and not stop us from going forward wiser. There was sexism. Was it the deciding or even overwhelming factor? Who knows? But sexism should be named where we see it and understood for what it is - unfairness, discrimination and prejudice that affects and limits ALL of us. By denting that sexism played a role is not the same as saying Obama did not earn his victory. Racism is also poisonous. (Homophobia and ageism - all of them limit human possibility and potential.) It is all bad stuff and it does no-one any good to deny it when it happens.

Onwards to November and an important step toward making the world a better place for all of us!

37. We are on the same page and the same team. And I'm proud
to be on that team with you.

Don't you wonder sometimes what it would be like to live in that head of MoDowd's? She couldn't be a very happy person, always seeing the down side in everything and never the good. And I do wonder why on earth she always goes at people based on their gender or sexual orientation. If a woman wears pantsuits, she's butch. If a man dresses nicely, he's effeminate. How about women wear pantsuits so they don't have embarrassing slip-showing moments and men dress nicely because they dress for the occasion? Or the hundred other reasons people dress the way they do?

Oh well, we'll probably never figure Mo out and if we did we'd probably wish we hadn't.

41. And then...
...every now and again she absolutely nails something or someone and it's hilarious. (She really earned that Bush nickname "the Cobra")It's always interesting when she writes about her background and family - her conservative Irish working class policeman-fireman relatives. Seems to explain a lot. She did go dulally during the high anxiety period of post 9/11 and especially the anthrax. In those days Frank Rich was one of the few sane voices - every other Saturday in the NYTimes. But give her her due - she drove the Bush family nuts in the run up to 1992.

"nobody had objected to her use of similar images about men over seven presidential campaigns"
Dowd has been a sexist jerk against both Democratic men, and once Senator Clinton made a go at it, Democratic women who dare to seriously try to run for president. She is a shit, a pathetic, painfully awful shit. The DC chorus sneers at us nobodies. We don't count. We are an inconvenience. We are blogbarians in bathrobes in our mother's basements, How dare we object?

22. Hillary knocked herself out of the race.
When will the constant denial end? She could have won despite the sexism from the media. She had a slight advantage since Obama's camp wasn't sneaking around trying to convince super delegates that she just couldn't win because she's a woman.

Obama won despite the racism that Hillary pandered to and the media embraced. He ran a far superior campaign and the superior candidate won. Race and gender have been used as nothing more than distraction and excuses. A wise woman once said "excellence is the best deterrent to racism or sexism".

"A woman is handicapped by her sex, and handicaps society, either by slavishly copying the pattern of man’s advance in the professions, or by refusing to compete with man at all."

but plenty of underhanded things went behind the scene that most people don't know. Suffice it to say that as far as I, and many of Clinton's people are concerned, the party leadership can go to hell.

Yeah, yeah, I know the theme, we're all now one big happy, disfunctional family and we will all sing kumbaya in the name of party unity.

Whatever......

32. If it is ignored now,
it will continue to be ignored in the future as well. It needs to be kept in the forefront for all the world to see that sexism continues to be alive and well in this country, or it will NEVER be brought under control.

If Democrats don't start addressing the issue NOW, when will we? The "next time" a woman is a serious candidate? Or will it be the time after that? Or, no, maybe we won't be ready then, so we'll make it the time after that, maybe.

Hillary was not, despite constant allegations, running a racist campaign. Your candidate won, and he is now OUR candidate....GET OVER the fact that he actually had serious competition, and think about what being a Democrat means!

And please familiarize yourself with my posts before making accusations about my being "in denial about that like so many Clinton supporters seem to be".
