Obama To Campaign In ... Alaska?
Obama To Campaign In ... Alaska?

By Greg Sargent - June 26, 2008, 11:33AM

Wow, talk about broadening the map. The Anchorage Daily News reports that Obama may actually campaign in Alaska, a state that's about as red as it gets.

"That is the plan -- we are pretty sure he's going to come at the end of the summer," Obama's new Alaska state director, Kat Pustay, told the paper.

We'll believe that when we see it, but if he does go it would be quite a statement. The last Democrat to win Alaska was Lyndon Johnson, during his landslide victory in 1964. John Kerry got only 36% there in 2004, and Al Gore fared even worse four years earlier, winning only 28%.

Late Update: We're not sure if a Dem presidential candidate has ever campaigned in Alaska, but we're sure our historian/reader types can figure it out...

1. There have been some super bad Republican scandals up there...

Really bad corruption involving oil and politicians. So, anything's possible.

3. I expect Obama to personally go to Alaska atleast once
He currently trails McCain by only 5 points in Alaska and Begich has tied Stevens for the Seante

4. I hope he does! I would suggest that he go sooner rather than later.
Flying weather gets pretty rough there in what we call fall...there it's WINTER for sure!

5. Hell Yeah!! I would looooove for him to come to Alaska.
One of our pet peeves as Alaskans is that we feel unappreciated by the political system because of our remoteness and small electorial vote. This would mean a lot to a lot of people.

10. Well, the problem is time
It took 11 hours to get to Alaska from NJ for me (with a stop in Seattle) to see my first grandchild in Eagle River. The most gorgeous place I've ever seen and I'd do it again, but I was exhausted after the trip and my butt hurt for two days.

11. LOL.
Yes, it can be a long grueling trip. I forget how bad it can be because we usually only travel to the West Coast and it's not so bad. Three and a half hours to Seattle, and then however long it takes to get to wherever we're going in California, not all that long in the air.

It's the same reason why when a lot of musical acts come up here, they only bring their guitar and not their whole band.

If Obama makes it up, I'll be pleasantly surprised. :)

8. We know he is going to Hawaii for his bio tour so hitting Alaska will mean he has literally
campaigned in all 50 states.

I like it.

13. I don't think that a Dem nominee ever campaigned in the GE in Alaska
But Richard Nixon did on the last weekend of the campaign of 1960! to fullfill his pledge to visit all 50 states. Nixon said it was a big mistake and he should have spent that time in Illinois.
