Arizona: McCain's problems grow Rasmussen: McCain down to 9 point lead
Edited on Mon Jun-30-08 12:54 PM by grantcart
Update on earlier report http://journals.democraticunderground.com/grantcart/91

Rasmussen's latest poll confirms what was reported in the earlier thread and noticed by Arizona pollsters; McCain may take the state but he has very soft support there, and it could be brought into play as a battleground state.

Rasmussen is now showing that McCain's lead, once at 25 points last year, has declined down to 9 points. McCain 49 Obama 40

This is the 4th straight poll that shows McCain at less than 51%.

However it is looking behind the totals that even more questions are raised:

1) In the category asking respondents to rank the candidates by favorability, under the highest choice "Very Favorable" Obama leads McCain by 7 points 28 to 21.

2) When it comes to handling the Iraqi war the respondents were asked "When it comes to the situation in Iraq, which is the more important goal for the next president to accomplish during his first term…winning the war or getting the troops home? " McCain's position of "winning the war" is favored by 1%.

47% Winning the war

46% Getting the troops home

7% Not sure

As previously reported Obama almost raised as much money as McCain in May despite the fact that McCain had a fund raiser with Bush and personally attended several fund raisers while Obama's has been mostly generated by small contributors there over the internet.

On edit adding article from ProSense's thread yesterday on McCain's problems with the Arizona Republican party

"People would be calling in to headquarters every week, absolutely enraged, threatening to leave the party because of some comments McCain made," Haney told me. "The guy has no core, his only principle is winning the presidency. He likes to call his campaign the 'straight talk express.' Well, down here we call it the 'forked tongue express.'"

"This just shows that McCain is mentally unstable and out of control and vindictive," Haney told me. "If he is determined to go through that much trouble to attack a district committee chairman, what does that say about his ability to handle real political problems

2. Barr should pick up 2% in Arizona
Nader and other down-ballot candidates should grab another 2% total. Winning 48% in Arizona could be a majority there this year.

Good info!

3. Rasmussen shows 6% picked a candidate besides the two main party candidates

Very odd results for a home state of a presidential candidate.

4. The southwest is beginning to wake up!
First New Mexico, and Nevada should be next. If we can get Obama's numbers up to 47 in Arizona, he could win it there.

You were right in your previous post, a growing number of Arizonans aren't used to seeing McCain's name on a ballot, let alone voting for him.

5. What most people don't realize is the high rate of migration to AZ and Nevada from
other states.

Both states are averaging something around 2% a month going back to 2000.

That means that the population of the state holds 30% new voters compared to 2000 the last time no incumbent ran.

Other polls by BRC showed that if McCain had not been the nominee that AZ would be trending Democratic.

I hope that Obama spends some money their forcing McCain into the embarrassing situation of having to campaign in his home state.

This raises the ludicrous question - who can McCain appoint as VP that can help him win his home state lol
