VoteVets and Me: We've Got General Clark's Back!
Edited on Mon Jun-30-08 01:16 PM by FLDem5

Please sign and pass on!

Dear FlDem5,

Yesterday, on Face the Nation, General Wesley Clark spoke honestly and bluntly about what it takes to be Commander in Chief. In doing so, while he said Senator John McCain’s service made him a hero to millions, including Clark himself, that experience does not trump the poor judgment that Senator McCain has shown on some of the most important issues in recent years.

What General Clark said was right, but the right-wing has been in an uproar. And even CNN accused Clark of "swift-boating" McCain. We need to fight back.

SIGN OUR PETITION THANKING GENERAL CLARK AND TELLING HIM TO NOT BACK DOWN

Let’s show General Clark that we have his back, and will not stand for any attempts to shut down this important debate.

We all honor Senator McCain's service, as General Clark said. But that does not mean that on matters of security, the military, and veterans issues that Senator McCain is beyond reproach. Nor does it mean that his service trumps the poor judgment he has shown in some of the most important issues of our time, including on the war in Iraq, the efforts to get Osama bin Laden, and veterans legislation like the 21st Century GI Bill.

SIGN OUR PETITION THANKING GENERAL CLARK AND TELLING HIM TO NOT BACK DOWN

It is important for General Clark to not back down, and to keep treating the American people like adults who can handle a real, honest, and blunt debate in these important times.

It some circles, this is called ‘straight talk,’ and it’s exactly what we need right now.

Thank you for your support,

Jon Soltz

And Obama need be the primary recipient of our messages. Being a POW is not reason to select one a president. / If Post traumatic stress disorders skews his thinking it might even disqualify him. Plus, McCain never really made real decisions about strategy. A pilot does not make him a strategist.

11. WES CLARK SPOKE THE TRUTH.

i'm seriously pissed off at Obama.
I have no choice but support Obama as the nominee, but I gotta say this:
I did not support Clark's decision to support Hillary Clinton but understood his reasons.
But otherwise, I am 1000% deeply and fiercely loyal to Wes Clark, and I got his back.

14. This is not about Clark vs. Obama.....
this is about McCain's service and what it is good for and what it aint.

So yeah.....we should have the General's back.

I'm busy writing now.

Perhaps if folks articulated their feelings on this to the media, we could make the pundits think twice.

That was one of the softest rejections ever in the history of politics. Rightfully so or not, the MSM was getting ready to swiftboat Obama over this 'controversy'. Even MSNBC by 9am was showing stock McCain footage of him as a POW with teaser lines implying that Obama was crapping on McCain's military service. Obama distanced himself just enough to put the controversy to rest but struck a good medium that still keeps Clark alive as a potential V.P.. The Republicans got a taste of Clark as the attack dog and that was good enough for now.

It's hard for me to be objective... to me it certainly looked like Obama was throwing Clark under the bus. Without, it would seem, bothering to check up on what Clark actually said; he had gone out of his way to call McCain a hero and to honor his service, and only then did he make the obvious point that military service does not in and of itself make someone more worthy of being CIC.

I have lost SO much respect for Obama today. I realize he had to clarify the misinformation that the MSM was spewing, but he did it in a cowardly way--going for soundbites rather than for actual clarification. But I hope that it's my blinders that are keeping me from seeing how this will play to Mr. and Ms. Average Voter.

Still, I would never in a million years even consider voting for McCain, so I'm still hoping for this ticket:

17. Excellent Frenchie. Thanks for the contacts.
We all have our roles to play in taking back America. Obama, Clark, and us too. I want Obama to become Presidednt and I know Clark spoke the trutgh. At the end of the day it isn't important if I think the Obama campaign has played this one perfectly or poorly so far, I know they are doing what they think they must in order to protect America from 4 more years of what we have had for the last 8 years.

But none of us are on the Presidential ballot. We can organize to support Wes Clark for saying what had to be said by someone. It doesn't have to have anything to do with Obama directly. This is our role to play. This is where we must step forwsard to put the media in it's place and show them we will not allow Democrats to be swiftboated for saying the truth.

Edited on Mon Jun-30-08 02:02 PM by FLDem5
"As the friendly force maneuvered through the treacherous region, it was suddenly subjected to an intense small arms fire from a well-concealed insurgent element. Although painfully wounded in the initial volley, Captain Clark immediately directed his men on a counter-assault of the enemy positions. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Captain Clark remained with his unit until the reactionary force arrived and the situation was well-in-hand. His courageous initiative and exemplary professionalism significantly contributed to the successful outcome of the engagement. Captain Clark's unquestionable valor in close combat against a hostile force is in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army."

32. Figures.
Swiftboating is defined as malicious unfair attacks on someones patriotism and courage. No one has shown greater patriotism and courage to America than Wesley Clark, and he showed it again yesterday by giving honest answers to direct questions. So of course now the claim is that Wes Clark is a swiftboater, and his honor is called into question even though Clark never accused John McCain of anything dishonorable and instead called him a hero.

Yup, that's the FOX playbook alright.

40. *** Jon Soltz on HuffPo: Right On, General! ***
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jon-soltz/right-on-general-clark-do_b_109977.html

So, in short, General Clark respects John McCain's service, calls him a hero to millions, but notes that experience doesn't make him qualified to be Commander in Chief.

Now, VoteVets.org isn't getting into the presidential race, but I don't see what is so wrong about what General Clark said. And yet, immediately and unsurprisingly, the McCain campaign let loose with a response that expressed shock and dismay. Almost right after that, all of the media was up in arms about how 'wrong' this was. Pretty disappointingly, even progressive surrogates couldn't muster the strength to back up General Clark on TV.

Why?

This wasn't a swift boating, or any low politics. General Clark called McCain a hero to millions for his sacrifice. And, that's a pretty big statement coming from a man who, himself, left Vietnam on a stretcher. But, facts are facts:

• Senator McCain's service and experience, both as a POW and as a Senator apparently hasn't infused him with a dose of good judgment.

• Senator McCain's experience hasn't led him to realize that the war in Iraq and it's continuance has empowered and emboldened Iran, and destabilized the region.

• Senator McCain's experience hasn't caused him to recognize that we're losing ground in Afghanistan, and Osama bin Laden is still out there, plotting.

• Senator McCain's experience didn't lead him to support the 21st Century GI Bill -- he opposed it. It didn't even make him feel the need to get back to Washington to vote on this -- one of the most important veterans' bills this Congress. He twice skipped votes on the GI Bill, to fundraise.

• Senator McCain's experience didn't help him empathize with troops are overstretched and overdeployed, when he voted against the bipartisan Webb-Hagel "Dwell Time Amendment," which would have given troops as much time at home as in the field.

Senator McCain is running on his experience, saying it makes him ready to lead right away. By doing so, he is asking people to look at what that experience taught him. By looking at Senator McCain's positions and votes (or lack of them), it seems that experience has not given him the right judgment on important issues of our time. And, while we should all honor Senator McCain's service, that doesn't mean we should necessarily honor it by putting him in the White House to take up George W. Bush's third term.

So, General Clark is 100 percent absolutely right, and he should not back down. I'd hope that some of the so-called progressives on television back him up on this, and not get intimidated by the media and McCain campaign press releases. These are important times, and deserve a blunt and honest debate.

In some circles, that's just called 'straight talk.'

Edited on Mon Jun-30-08 04:40 PM by mckara
We need another intelligent candidate to run with Barack this fall.

Fortunately, we Democrats have many qualified candidates to join the ticket.

Clark's military experience makes him an asset to Obama, and his credibility on security matters, makes him an effective hatchet-man for criticizing McSame's hawkish policies.

55. I totally support General Clark's comments and signed your petition; HOWEVER,
I do not agree with the comment about emboldening Iran and wish you had not thrown that into the petition.

Iran is responding as any country would when its next door neighbor is invaded by an imperialist war machine that has called it a member of the Axis of Evil.

My opinion is that we haven't emboldened them so much as provoked them.

Otherwise, thanks for helping us to show our support for General Clark.

Signed,

A Vietnam vet

61. Hero-hood is overblown
"Survivor"? - you bet. Hero? - by what standards??? Sure it's dangerous to fly a military plane into an enemy stronghold. Alot of guys/gals have and never came back. Why aren't THEY heros and not just casualties??? McCain had nothing to do with ending the war which saw him sit out a good portion of it in the Hanoi Hilton. That and his military "bloodline" deosn't make him automatically qualified for CIC. It just does not.

I hope more folks of Clark's stature and experience do MORE of this "straight talking"!

64. my choice for president in '04! I'd march if he told me to!
His comments were factual and not over the line. I hope Obama's comments were coordinated, but still, he didn't mention McCain's torture and I can only assume Obama was saying that, when Clark didn't mention torture, as saying, everything else is fair ground - otherwise, I disagree with Obama on this...

Keep telling the truth, Wesley! We need Obama, not McSame!

68. Signed--Wes Clark was right on about McCain--screw the right wing shriekers.
They didn't scream about the swift boat liars dissing John Kerry or other Democratic vets being slandered. What Wes Clark said about McCain showed no disrespect, but was an honest description of the fact that getting taken prisoner does not give one presidential or executive experience.

Not bad for one dqay, but we have to keep this rolling. We need to send this petition link to as many people who value truth and integrity as we can.

If we blow the media over with our anger over this, they will be forced to cover the controversy they caused with their false spin rather than continuing to push their lies about wes Clark and John McCain.
