DNC, Obama to seek broad input for party platform

WASHINGTON - The Democratic National Committee and Barack Obama's presidential campaign will hold meetings in all 50 states to get voters more involved in developing the party platform.

Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano will chair the Platform Drafting Committee, the DNC and the Obama campaign were scheduled to announce Tuesday. The committee will invite members of the public to attend meetings around the country, with policy experts and other Democratic officials on hand to answer questions.
Both political parties produce a platform, or statement of its principles, each presidential election year. In the past, the DNC has held a limited number of public meetings around the country to seek input on the document, generally from advocacy organizations or research groups.

Voters can go to Obama's campaign Web site, http://www.barackobama.com , to sign up to host one of the meetings, which will take place July 19-27. The drafting committee will receive a report with input from the meetings Aug. 1 before assembling a draft platform in Cleveland on Aug. 2-3.
The draft will serve as a working document for the full Platform Committee, which will meet Aug. 9 in Pittsburgh to consider and vote on the document. Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, former New Mexico Attorney General Patricia Madrid and former Discovery Communications President and CEO Judith McHale are co-chairs of the committee.

If the Dem base is in fact more liberal than CW suggests... well here is our opportunity to prove it, and move the entire party with us.

8. Find every last DLC'er, bluedog, and corporatist in your town
And lock 'em up in the basement the day of your local meeting.

Then drag every liberal you can find kicking and screaming if necessary.

9. That'd be most dems where I live.
You should have seen the looks on their faces when I asked if anyone wanted to support a resolution to do away with the death penalty.

14. News Hounds reporting that Shep Smith on FOX's Studio B hinted at possible outside interference
http://www.newshounds.us/2008/07/08/shepard_smith_makes_provocative_comment_about_dnc_public_platform_meetings.php

Today on Studio B, Shepard Smith made a provocative comment hinting at the possibility of outside interference with the creation of the Democratic Party platform during the DNC public platform meetings scheduled in 50 States.

With the chyron underneath “DNC TO HOLD PUBLIC PLATFORM MEETINGS IN ALL 50 STATES”, Smith reported,

"The Democratic National Committee is going for a big tent theme heading into the convention in August. Barrack Obama’s campaign teaming up with party officials to host public meetings in all of the 50 states, to put together the party’s platform.”

Then he added, “That means in theory, any of us could show up at one of those meetings and have a say in the official Democratic line for major issues. In theory. “

15. Do you have a membership card from your local Democratic party organization?
Edited on Tue Jul-08-08 09:13 PM by newmajority
Since these are party platform meetings, they should be restricted to Democrats. Maybe carded party members, and anyone they bring with them?

If I went to a Republican party meeting of this nature, and started calling out ideas for their platform, I imagine they would throw me out immediately. Tragically, in some places, Republicans will sabotage our platform, and someone will assume they're just "working class voters" :eyes:

17. Those fucking assholes.
It is so hard not to hate those kinds of people. I know not all conservatives are cheating lying bastards... but I wish the ones that aren't would leave the official party of liars cheats and thieves. And perverts.

Damn. x(

16. I suppose it's worth a try - we could pack the meetings
with people who wanted to restore the 4th amendment. But, I can't remember the last time any candidate paid much attention to the platform.

18. Even if the candidates don't pay attention at first...
Edited on Wed Jul-09-08 09:25 AM by redqueen
just proving that the lefty-left agenda has more support than conventional wisdom suggests would go a long way towards convincing more that it's possible to move that way and get elected.

Especially if this next go-round, things still don't change much. I doubt I'm the only person wondering why I haven't already just moved to the Green party... or maybe we could form a Liberal Democratic party here.

19. Odds are, if we managed to get a left leaning platform,
the party leaders (so to speak) would still used the tired old excuse that activists always run to the left of the general public and so such a platfomr wouldn't mean a thing. And, even if every last Democratic voter made it clear this is what they supported, the party's corporate masters wouldn't approve of the candidates and elected officials paying attention to this sort of platform.
