McCain's "answer" on whether gay couples should be "allowed" to adopt makes no sense, as usual
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/13/us/politics/13mccain.html?partner=rssuserland&emc=rss#

Mr. McCain, who with his wife, Cindy, has an adopted daughter, said flatly that he opposed allowing gay couples to adopt. “I think that we’ve proven that both parents are important in the success of a family so, no, I don’t believe in gay adoption,” he said.

1. He is a jackass
If there is a couple, there are "both" parents. I gues he doesnt think single straight people should be able to adopt either. Should widows and divorced people have to relinquish custody. Why don't these idiots worry about our real problems instead of creating problems that don't exist.

2. Parents of opposite genders, I think he means.
so he'd be fine if a lesbian and a gay man decided to adopt a child together, I think is what he's saying. Or not.

4. That's what he meant.
In other words, more stupid homophobia designed to pander to his stupid, fundamentalist, homophobic base.

7. yup
John and Cindy should NOT be casting stones on what is considered a "functional" environment to raise a family, particularly given certain things in their past.

11. Not For The Reason You Think
Since John McCain has been in Washington and Cindy McCain has mostly remained in Arizona, the two of them have not provided a traditional two parent home. In fact, I would say Cindy has frequently functioned as a single parent, given the amount of time her husband has been away.

Children with a mother and father do better, indeed. :eyes:

And I'm sure their children turned out fine, but I just hate the judgement that is being passed.

16. if he's going to set himself up as an 'example' he needs to explain
how many people who have a serious prescription drug addiction, should be allowed to adopt. Cindy was at the peak of her personal addiction when Bridget came into their family.

As an adoptive mother myself, I can say with all honesty, this fact about their 'adoption story' bothers the hell out of me.
To have him pontificate on what is healthy for the child??- or in the childs best interest????

peace~

That is really the problem. He doesn't think.

23. The more I hear from him, the more persuaded I am about that
Every single thing out of that man's mouth must be explained, refined, restated... He's not a very bright man, and I really don't understand what he brings to the country. Why is he in this - all I can see is self-aggrandizement.

6. Hey John, guess what?
They're raising kids most straight couples won't consider adopting.

In a perfect world, every child has a loving father and mother, but it's not a perfect world. Kids need parents, and whoever is willing to provide a child with parenting is who that child's parent should be.

Many children adopted by gay couples are children who would never be adopted by the usual straight adopting couples.

15. He has a point
I mean the current foster care system is great and we really don't need stable homes with decent caring people with good incomes in them raising children. :sarcasm:

but reporters never challenge religious rightwing bullshit repeated as fact.

They just let people repeat it endlessly.

20. I am a second grade teacher.
A few years ago I had a student whose parents are a lesbian couple. I can honestly say I have never seen so much love in one family for each other and for their child. On the other hand, I have had to report suspected child abuse (as required by law) on a traditional heterosexual couple. John McCain only sees what he wants to see and seems to be clueless to what a "family" really is.

Does he really have no idea that a gay couple would be comprised of TWO people and therefore provide a home with two parents?

24. Which family would that be, Senator?
Your first family or your second?

It was so kind of you to adopt your first wife's sons. Did you stay in contact after the divorce? Were you there for your daughter from your first wife as she grew up? How did that little dynamic work out after you left wife number one for wife number two?

Your statement isn't just insulting to gay couples (couple = two) it's pretty damned insulting to millions of single parents - you know, like lady that became one after you left her for the beer heiress?
