***Obama on Fareed Zakaria show thread, CNN 1PM EST
Edited on Sun Jul-13-08 11:58 AM by Kurt_and_Hunter
Love him or hate him, Fareed is not the average TV moran, so this should be one of the more intellectually rich conversations with Obama we will see on TV before the election.

6. For this I wish I had cable. I agree that FZ is "not the average TV moran".
I really hope that someone who watches this program will post some commentary on it.

And as a pre-emptive reply to anyone who might suggest I can watch the video on my computer later -- no, I can't. I have a Fred Flinstone era computer running on Windows98 with the slowest (out in the boonies) dialup connection ever. Video and audio files are just not doable.

Thank you, Kurt_and_Hunter, for posting this headsup.

14. I hope all the debates are in HD too.
Obama will have a huge advantage because Gramps' makeup job will be very obvious.

21. Thank you so much for posting that link! I was actually able to listen to it!
Aside from the "buffering" every 3rd or 4th word (aaaarrrrgggghhhh!), I got to hear almost the whole thing, with just a word here and there lost altogether.

Thanks again!

12. They just showed a picture . . .
of Obama carrying Zakaria's book in one hand. Now when was the last time you saw * with a book in his hand (not counting "My Pet Goat")?

13. Extremely interesting discussion. Very thoughtful questions and
answers. No breaking news, but just very serious responses to very serious issues.

15. I didnt get Obama's response on Jerusalem
He had said he supports Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and on the show he did not really specifiy his position.

17. He said Jerusalem not divided, but corrected the AIPAC speech wording-as has done elsewhere.
By not divided, meant no physical divide, like barbed wire. He wants the parties to work this out themselves, as in the Clinton solution of both Palestinians and Israelis to have as capitol. That both have grievances, but experience shown that the Palestinian methods haven't worked well for their people. A No Drama Obama cool-headed, serious approach to all questions.

Highly recommend people send this around when available. Not just sound bites about diplomacy; he shows sophistication, depth and sincerity of it, but in his Baracky way. Nice.

Brought up the background of mother early-on with micro-business/financing for the then third world. Indonesia, etc. The women in his life have been extraordinary.

Alliances, alliances, alliances. Reassuring words, tone and conveying effective leadership. Nothing earth-moving about Iraq, Iran, Darfur, but great display of the measure of the man and what kind of intervention we'd take, and not.

Zakaria is trying to get John McCain on his show. Just wait until the American people get a load of that.

I hope this interview gets posted on CNN's website and on youtube. Everyone needs to see it.

20. I was very impressed by Obama's thoughtful answers
and Fareed Zakaria gets an A
in his approach to conducting the interview.

and it is clear that Mr. Zakaria's show,
after this first showing,
is easily one of the best shows on television,
if not one of the best in the realm of politics.
Let's hope he keeps it up.

The 3 rather progressive economists on the show
for the last 15 minutes were also excellent.

Way to go CNN!
Finally some programming we can believe in.
for now.

which America has not seen in a long, long time from a major party presidential candidate.

I agree that Fareed Zakaria conducted a great interview, although I understand that he is a Republican and a former neocon who has seen the error of his way.

23. And he's Harvard and Yale educated. Obama is used to taking on these types.
They have their own way of talking which I see in my Yalie acquaintances. They speak very fast which you can see with Howard Dean (and also, interestingly, Jodie Foster). They can be disarming at first because you don't expect it. Obama figured this Club out a long time ago...
