What's the Point of Including Michelle?
Edited on Sun Jul-13-08 11:28 PM by sparosnare
I don't really care if the "elitist" New Yorker came up with an idea to stir up controversy and sell some mags (or had a more sinister motive); if their cartoonist crafted a little drawing depicting Obama as a terrorist and weakly called it satire. But Michelle? As the spouse of a candidate, the line should have been drawn there. She is not running for office.

Have we ever seen such a depiction of a Republican first lady or potential first lady?

But Hillary (first) and now Michelle - it's A-OK to portray them as evil women because they don't keep their mouths shut like good little Stepford wives.

I'm surprised Britt didn't draw Malia and Sasha into the cartoon. Why stop with the wife? I'm sure they are every bit as dangerous as their parents.

2. Because, like Barack Obama, Michelle Obama has been attacked and turned into someone that she is not
by the right-wing.

Big difference; she deserves it and should go to jail with the rest of them.

7. This is what I'm curious about.
It's one thing to satirize a president, but a candidate?

And his wife?

8. Like it or not, she's a right-wing target

First, I'm in the camp that sees this cover as biting satire. It defies the news media - even Fox - to take it at face value or be counted as those who dare to buy into the smears and risk a rapid response from the Obama camp. Will they want to go there after they've seen Obama weather the storms in the primary?

It's so "in your face" that those who WANT to believe all the smears are forced to scratch their heads and confront the totality of all the stuff that's been said about the Obamas as over-the-top.

If someone is going to believe all the ridiculous extremism the cover implies, was there really anything that Team Obama could do to get their vote?

Having said that, back to Michelle. Since the 527's were trying to target her by distorting her "proud of America" quote and spreading false rumors of the "whitey" video, the smears against her might as well be aired out alongside Barack's - to see the sum total of ALL the crap that's been said about the both of them has to make someone, even those LIVs who think he IS a Muslim - think that it seems like a bit much.

10. CLICK! I just realized that Michelle is Angela Davis.
Angela Davis was a controversial figure back in the 60's and 70's. I seem to recall that she was a black panther, a communist and a university professor. You can just imagine what a terrifying threat to the establishment she was!
