Has this crossed your mind? I mean America is already in the pits with George Bush as captain. With McCain captaining the pirate ship what's the point staying anymore, might as well jump ship and swim to greener pastures.

1. The thing is...
Edited on Sat Jul-19-08 04:42 AM by Franks Wild Years
...you couldn't really bank on other parts of the world being any safer with McCain in control of the World's most powerful nation and consequently a rather dangerous set of buttons. I think the best option would be to start a new civillisation near to the centre of the Earth.

you can't escape things like global warming and war.

but i will be happy to see that born again Baldwin brother leave when Obama wins.

18. "you can't escape things like global warming and war."
But you can escape the lack of healthcare in the U.S., since we're a 3rd world nation that believes in survival of the fittest. I don't think this country will ever transition to 1st world status and start single-payer.

24. Which countries with socialized medicine are going to give you citizenship?
I think that is an option only for the few fortunate to have experience in a needed field OR those who are independently wealthy.

4. might travel and work for the next 4 years.
I work in IT/ecommerce and my job doesn't require me to be in any physical location. All I need is access to the internet and I'm set. I'm still young without a gf, so working while travelling will be quite appealing if the shit hits the fan.

there would be challenges.

This country is in the process of limiting how much wealth you can take with you when you change citizenship (which seems ironic with all the offshore bank accounts out there). Certain countries require that you come with enough means so you won't be a financial burden on their taxpayers.

Unless you're heading to a country with a growing economy, your standard of living may not be as you enjoy it here. But then again, if you stay here, your standard of living may not be as you once enjoyed it here.

You would really need to be able to sever your past and start over. Your flight would be akin to forward-thinking Germans and other Europeans who left before Hitler took over. And the trouble is always you don't know how bad it would have to get before you leave and by then, it may be too late.

7. Conscription has crossed my mind with McCain
McCain is a war-monger and he'll introduce conscription if need be, that's on the back of my head. I ain't going to risk my life for a nutter like McCain so if there's a small window before its too late...au revoir.

9. I'm sorta already there anyway
I was named station chief for Europe years ago, and am based in Germany. As long as
I want it, the post remains mine. I'm not ready for a desk job Stateside, anyway. Plus,
my wife is German, and she does not want to move to a Republican-dominated USA. Our
daughters are very much bi-cultural as well as dual nationals, and are at home in both
countries and languages. For now, they live in New York, but the world remains open to
them. As long as my job demands that I be on station here much of the year, all I have
to put up with is phone calls from the States at all hours of the night, gas at $9, and
living on slave wages due to the fact that I'm paid in dollars and live in Euros. Luckily,
my wife works as well, and is paid in euros with 6 weeks paid vacation and comprehensive
health insurance.

On the flip side, I say when and where I take time off, get to live in a relatively
progressive society, and can always run home any time I want to.

12. Why bother?
The Fourth Reich's war machine can find anyone anywhere and render them at will. I'll stay right here and be a pain in their ass, as I witness the whole house of cards collapse around them.

And I'll laugh in their face as they cry out for the help they denied so many others.

16. I met a young couple yesterday in rural missouri... he just enlisted
They were dirt poor. She was almost done with an online BA in Criminal Justice. Couldn't afford a regular school... graduated when she was sixteen... straight A's. He wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed... construction guy... laid off before he could join the Union. No money, no income at all. They had one 18 month old and she had TWO in the oven.

The flies... the smell of poverty... the old house with almost nothing in it. He found out I was a Veteran and tried to give me his butch act about his willingness to shoot a "towel head." I confronted him, with love, that he needed more accurate information. I asked him what HE would do if his older brother got killed by an occupying military force. He'd pick up a gun and fight.

He almost started crying. He told me he didn't mean it. Confessed that he was just acting "bad." Told me his family was mostly African American and that he respects ALL people as long as they show respect to him.

Then he got real... told me about the enlistment bonuses... the combat pay... what his monthly salary would be. I looked around and couldn't blame him at all.

Where you gonna go?

I'm going to be here at ground zero, advocating for military families and veterans... protesting stupid fuckin war... passing out bananas at the food shelf...

Taking MY place on the "great mandala."

and when we're ALL homeless... we'll go down to the river and wash our clothes just like we used to.

I am sick of being used to fund wars and military killing machines, and this country is going down. I don't want wait until the food and gas runs out.

22. If a good opportunity came my way, I would leave.
Even if Obama wins. I'm sick of job-hunting, sick of struggling, and wondering why life has to be so damned hard. I'm old enough to know it wasn't always like this. This is no longer the country I grew up in, and no longer worth fighting for if the American people are so stupid as to allow another term of Bush in the form of McCain. I've had enough. Too many Americans are nothing but poorly educated morons I have nothing in common with anymore.

25. I thought that when Bush got re-elected
But I'm still here. Most likely I'm not leaving the U.S.of A. even with McCain (as in Cain and Able) at the helm.

But, then again, if I saw WWIII on the horizon, I might.
