If it were up to me... and it's not.... Jack Reed would be Obama's VP

Cons:

- Rhode Island is solidly blue already.

Pros:

- Been to Iraq 11 times. Voted against the IWR.

- 1971 West Point grad. Commanded the 82nd Airborne.

- Still drives a 1991 Ford Escort. (Don't belittle this... it says a lot about the guy).

- Voted against FISA... providing Obama some cover there.

I think Americans would very easily be able to picture this man as President, if the situation arose.

I think it would be an inspiring (and inspired) choice.

He has solid lefty creds... and his personal history makes it VERY hard for the right to find something to attack him on.

I don't know how his vetting is going... but I REALLY like what I see.

1. Yes, he's still my number-one choice, but he's declared that he does not want the job.
Over and over, in fact.

11. The only real downside I can see with Reed is that he's not
especially telegenic--he sort of makes uncomfortable faces the way Bill Richardson used to in debates. And he's very short. I don't know if any of that matters for VP, though (obviously it matters for Prez).

16. Wrong. RI Governor is
a bush republican of the worse kind. Never saw a social program he thought was any good.

17. RI governor is a Republican...
Also, while Reed is great concerning issues, he is not a great public speaker, far from it.

9. Good point. Let's stop poaching from our narrow majority in The Senate.
That's why I've stopped suggesting Barbara Boxer.

10. Except for one little problem.
He won't bring anything to the West, and Sen. Reed is from RI.

Also another problem that I just thought of - he's another Senator, and 2 senators on a ticket is not exactly a viable idea.

18. A) I already pointed out that one "con".... B) the meme about "two senators" is bogus

Prior to this year, the meme was that Senators don't get elected PERIOD. Only two in our history, none since JFK.

In 1992, the meme was that a VP pick should provide "geographical balance". Clinton picking Gore went against that.

The sample set is too small.... this is only the 13th election in the "TV age". There isn't only ONE WAY to do this.

The meme before this year was that America wouldn't elect a non-white.... or someone with a name like Barack Hussein Obama....

All the old ideas of what is "viable" are out the window.

20. I agree--I'm tired of the "no Senators" argument. Americans apparently
decided this year that they want a Prez who's actually DEALT with national and international issues (as opposed to pothole-filling budgets and state tourism promotion).

19. 86 and 89
He has an 86 rating with the ACLU and an 89 rating with the HRC, tied with most liberal senators. No one has a higher rating (in the Senate) from either group. He is one of the best senators that nobody knows about.

29. Well, Bayh has been considered a major VP choice for both Hillary and Obama--
just wondering why no one ever brings up the fact that we'd lose that Senate seat. Hey, I'd look for ANY excuse to keep Vanilla Bayh off the ticket.

13. Jack Reed is too valuable
to his constituents and the US as a whole to stick him in the job of VP. He is also too much of a nice person to have to get in the mud with the resit of the jackals

in the Armed Services Committee--but I think Obama should really consider him for SecDef.

22. In as much as I don't think we can spare a single Senator,
Jack Reed said perhaps the dumbest and most idiotic thing I've ever heard about the electronic voting machines in August '04.

I had written to him repeatedly about it and got the standard BS response. "Thank you for writing. Though we appreciated your concerns. . ." blah blah blah.

I didn't get to speak with him directly on that particular occasion. He had to split quickly because of a scheduling conflict.

He was asked about the machines by someone else.

He said "I'm fully confidant that Diebold will do the right thing." I nearly fell off my chair.

He didn't have a clue about the nefarious nature and total insecurity of the voting technology.

Arghhh & Duh.
