McCain Falsely Stated The Surge Caused The Anbar Awakening

McCain Stated The Surge “Began The Anbar Awakening.” During an interview on CBS’s “Evening News,” Katie Couric asked John McCain about Obama’s assertion that improved security conditions in Iraq were the result of numerous factors, not merely the surge. McCain said, “Colonel McFarland was contacted by one of the major Sunni sheiks. Because of the surge we were able to go out and protect that sheik and others. And it began the Anbar awakening. I mean, that’s just a matter of history. Thanks to General Petraeus, our leadership, and the sacrifice of brave young Americans. I mean, to deny that their sacrifice didn’t make possible the success of the surge in Iraq, I think, does a great disservice to young men and women who are serving and have sacrificed.” {CBS, “Evening News,”}

* The Anbar Awakening Came Before The Surge. As Colin Kahl noted in Foreign Affairs, “The Awakening began in Anbar Province more than a year before the surge and took off in the summer and fall of 2006 in Ramadi and elsewhere, long before extra U.S. forces started flowing into Iraq in February and March of 2007.” {Foreign Affairs, July/August 2008}

* General McFarland Described The Anbar Awakening In September 2006. According to the National Security Network’s Ilan Goldenberg, “The surge wasn’t even announced until a few months after the Anbar Awakening… Colonel MacFarland explaining the Anbar Awakening to Pam Hess of UPI, on September 29 2006. That would be almost four months before the President even announced the surge. Petraeus wasn’t even in Iraq yet.” {National Security Network, 7/22/08}

2. Keith Olbermann mentioned another gaffe in the Couric interview
McCain said that Iraq was the first major military combat after 9/11. He forgot about Afghanistan.

4. I think it's still on their website
Keith showed footage of it. One of the Young Turks was the person who picked up on it.

5. I knew I'd seen this yesterday:

CBS News omitted a second McCain falsehood: his characterization of Iraq war as "the first major conflict since 9/11"

Summary: In a second omission of a falsehood by Sen. John McCain during his interview with Katie Couric, the CBS Evening News did not air a statement in which McCain characterized the war in Iraq as "the first major conflict since 9/11," apparently disregarding the war in Afghanistan, which began in October 2001.

6. and you know who's going to hear/see/read any of this?
the people here, and about ten others

what's the deal with the 527s?

is he committing political suicide?

I'm afraid McCain's attacks are going to start having the effects of the Swiftboaters, and he's going to, with the avid, slavish cooperation of the M$M, to make this campaign about national security, and Obama's inability to handle it.

the race for Kerry was over after the Swiftboat fiasco, and you just watch and see what happens in the next few weeks

if they don't fight back HARD and NOW, it's going to be a very bad thing, and he's going to find himself in the same boat Dukakis was in

he went from a THIRTEEN point lead on Aug 3, to a SIX point deficit in less than three weeks

Obama's lead is less than half that

think it can't happen again
