** Snopes: Obama Snubs US troops in Afghanistan -FALSE! **
Edited on Fri Jul-25-08 02:42 PM by FLDem5
http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/afghanistan.asp

Sorry - I can't Copy and Paste from Snopes, but please go and read it there!
I submitted it to them yesterday, and just got the email back.

Quotes from soldiers there, "Personally, I think any Officer who would publicly gripe about not getting "thanked" for his service by a civilian is a disgrace to the military."

"I am disgusted to be serving alongside a liar like Captain Porter, I hope he gets court martialed for lying."

Feel free to kick and recommend so it gets lots of exposure for browsers here, this thing is viral right now.

23. There are ways
Select the entire page: CTRL-A under Windows, command-A on a Mac

Copy everything you've selected: CTRL-C, command-C respectively

Paste it into notebook or TextEdit (on a Mac, make sure you use Edit->Paste and Match Style). On my Mac, sometimes I've had to copy and past from TextEdit into another TextEdit window to get it right

This should get it into a format where you can exercise your fair use rights.

Here are two paragraphs from the link:

Origins: Tales of prominent Democrats snubbing or acting rudely towards military and security personnel (and tales of those personnel responding in kind) have been a common form of political rumor over the last few decades, so it was probably only a matter of time before an example of such popped up during the 2008 presidential election cycle.

The above-quoted account of Senator Barack Obama's supposedly "blowing off" military personnel in Afghanistan started hitting our inbox almost immediately after the senator's visit to that country during his July 2008 trip to the Middle East. It's difficult to independently verify the details recounted above because press coverage of Senator Obama's Middle East visit was severely limited, but according to an Army spokesperson (as quoted in the New York Daily News) they are false: The latest chain e-mail smear against Barack Obama: He "blew off" troops at an Afghan base to shoot hoops for a publicity photo.

Edited on Sat Jul-26-08 11:42 AM by Lasher
I had the same problem at Snopes before but lately I can copy & paste like the wind. I'm assuming they changed it back so that we can again copy more easily from their site.

I was able to circumvent this problem before on my Windows Vista computer by printing to file, using Microsoft XPS Document Writer. But like I said, I don't have to do that any more at Snopes.

Edit: I've already used this Snopes article in an email 'reply to all' rebuttal.

7. when are people going to realize that it DOESN'T matter that things
are debunked

all they have to do is release the lies, and they become part of the consciousness? even when they're debunked, the mere fact of their discussion redounds negatively

it's been shown statistically to be just as bad for the victim of the lie to have it shown to be a lie. the important thing is to keep the discussion going

how many people think Saddam was behind 911?

that he was tied in with Osama?

that we found WMDs in Iraq?

that Obama is a Muslim?

that Michelle railed against Whitey in church?

do I have to go on?

you'll see this used continuously throughout the campaign?

those that pay attention hold their noses and vote for the dem pres candidate, hoping for the day a viable third party emerges

So no one is surprised. Thank GOD Obama has the good sense to have a smack down team to handle this kind of smear. No matter what canidate is put up, this is and will continue to happen. So when it does, we do not sit and wring our hands.. we beat them over the head with the truth.

There will always be a 10% and rightwing talking heads who depend on it for their livelihood who are going to believe any lie and pass it off as the truth.. they were never going to vote Obama or any democrat and I could give a shiny rats nether regions about any of them :)

The people we have to be concerned with are those who catch just tid bits of news here and there..

"The original poster attributed the message to an anonymous Air Force officer in the hope it would give the author, a Utah Army National Guard intelligence officer, some cover. But the Army captain’s wife had already forwarded it to others who posted the e-mail in full with the couple’s names."

Nice try, Captain Asscarrot. But NOT. THIS. TIME, lying sack of crap.

51. Don't need Mitt behind this, right wing racist Mormon republicans do this shit on their own
don't forget, the Mormon church was one of the last organizations to integrate in the US. 1974 or so. Before then, blacks were the direct descendants of Cain (mark of Cain) and hence inferior/evil.

They didn't integrate because it was right, they did it under extreme political pressure from other countries and the BSA.

62. Utah is the reddest state in the Union, the most a dem has received here is 33 (Clinton, 1996)
Obama is polling 31%.

It didn't used to be like that, in the 70s we were very blue. People who study it say it was abortion but I think it was money. If there is one thing Mormons love, its money so they pick the party that will make them richer.

They are not very Christian (IMHO) but then, neither are many "christians."

18. listen, I hope you're right, but WHEN has this sort of thing ever helped us?
I'm going on what I've seen happen, and this thing ALWAYS serves to cement whatever negative impression in the public's mind that the original lie purveyed.

it's physiological. you remember the lie, and that memory supercedes the debunking

they know that, and that's why they do it

over and over and over and over

the mere refutation simply repeats the lie. very insidious. very effective

Just repeating the rumors, even to declare them false, extends their life. And all of us on this board would know a rumor like this one would definitely be false.

Maybe not everyone knows to consult Snopes to debunk rumors and urban legends, but we also have Obama's site FighttheSmears.com as a resource.

there is too much rumor and misinformation and people are quite receptive to getting the other side.

So it is helpful in getting the information out to people that are doing the canvassing.

Check out this article from Army Times:

Army Times sent an e-mail to Porter, a Utah Army National Guard member assigned to the 142nd Military Intelligence Battalion, asking if he could verify that he wrote the controversial e-mail and requesting an interview.

Porter’s reply declined the interview request, but said:

“I am writing this to ask that you delete my e-mail and not forward it, after checking my sources some of the information that was put out in my e-mail was wrong. This e-mail was meant only for my family. Please respect my wishes and delete the e-mail and if there are any blogs you have my e-mail portrayed on I would ask if you would take it down too.”

When contacted, Tiffany Porter who identified herself as his wife, said: “There were discrepancies in the e-mail, but I am not at liberty to say more.”

The Army refuted the accuracy of the account of the Obama visit.

“These comments are inappropriate and factually incorrect,” Bagram spokesman Lt. Col. Rumi Nielson-Green told the New York Daily News.

In the OP by Rick Moran (no, I didn't make that up):Evidently, if you're a soldier in Afghanistan and there are no cameras around to record how much you love the troops, you can blow them off if you are Barack Obama.

Posted by migtex1234: Wow. And this nonsense is on a site that bills itself as having something to do with Thinking? Please.

Obama is the guy that wants to increase our troop strength in Afghanistan, and is currently lecturing the Europeans, on their own soil, that they need to do more there.

McCain is the guy that wants, instead, to stay in Iraq for 100 years (why again?).

Posted by Jeff: He never said that. Find me the quote and post it on this site. You won't be able to.

I saw with my own eyes ( on CNN & Cspan) his warm greetings with the troops, and noted that he flew around to several bases on his trip.I hear the media got annoyed because he let the military photographers do the shoot. Hardly snubbing them!
Contrast that with those stiff elitist meetings with W, fakey....... posed.
Or McLame........who would creak & call them all his "friends"!

instead took text from other web sources, and
inserted it as his own.

Later he retracts by saying
to delete his email,
(unspecified)information in it was wrong,
claims it was only meant for his family despite including he's a father of six as though his "family" would somehow not know that.

Captain Porter, you seem to be part of the worst threat America faces: Republicans.

58. The new McCain Meme: "Obama Works Out A Lot, Plays Basketball."
Seriously, there's a pattern here during the trip. McCain's team had nothing on Obama so they started to go after his basketball playing and exercise regimen. It's in CPT Porter's fictional account, it appears all over the wingnut blogs, with frequent references to the fancy hotel workout rooms.

It certainly makes a big appearance in the new McCain attack ad... and in an unintentionally hysterical twist, they attack Obama for "not visiting the troops" while showing video of Obama visiting the troops. Of course, it's the now iconic 3-point shot in Kuwait.

Man, that initial photo op that kicked off Obama's trip must have really fried the McCain camp's cookie. They're in a tizzy. And they're gonna go after Obama for his fitness and athletic prowess. Oooh! Scary.

This is going to be a very weird election, I'm thinking.
