That's what I learned last week as I prepared to join more than 20,000 other volunteers who will flood midtown during the Madison Square Garden gala, clad in city-issued white polo shirts and khaki pants.

The hour-long session was a blend of happy chanting - "I will make a difference" - and sweaty practice handshakes.
"I think we're being brainwashed," one man muttered as Nate Brooks, a professional training specialist, ended the interactive coaching session.
