Please allow me to say this about MSNBC's Michael Smerconish:
Those of us who live in Philly who choose to occasionally subject ourselves to The Big Talker 1210 Radio, which used to be a wonderful station when it was the CBS affiliate (I'll talk about that another time), run into Smerconish here and there and just let me tell you that although he's posturing that he's 'supporting' Obama, make no mistake: he is a smug, arrogant, know-it-all, RW talk-radio host who has no problem blasting anyone and anything which a Progressive would hold dear.

He has interviewed all kinds of shithead authors who had those best-sellers about how stupid liberals are, or the sanctity of life as long as it is in the womb, individuals who are 'victims' of affirmative action, people who are discriminated against (their words) by liberals and liberal institutions such as colleges and universities, and the like. His rabid participation and identification with these people is nauseating at best, revolting at worst.

What 'Smerc' (David Gregory's appellation) has done is separated himself from the knee-jerk Hannity and O'Reilly (who are much more 'informed' and 'talented' than he) and is faking it: he has no intention of supporting anyone who's a Dem, BUT, he needed to do something to distinguish himself. It's actually pretty safe to do what he does and he won't lose his extremist audience b/c they also hate McCain, or at least, don't feel particularly enthusiastic about him as the nominee.

Smerconish tried hosting the AM show on MSNBC when Imus lost his job, and demonstrated that he (Smerconish) is the most two-dimensional, narrow, uninformed, poorly-read, Northeast Philadelphia Stupid, RWer ever to appear on TV, and that's saying a lot. It was embarrassing when he would use Philadelphia allusions and references - trivial and hackneyed ones at that: Cheese steaks, Tastykakes, Eagles, Phillies, instead of Curtis Institute of Music, the newly expanding Museum of Art, the Home of the Constitution of the US, the Declaration of Independence, The American Flag, The University of Pennsylvania, The Barnes Foundation (which contains 3 BILLION dollars worth of paintings (yes that's Billion, not Million, and all the other intellectual and 'highbrow' assets of the city and its environs. He's a tin horn O'Reilly and is not deserving of one iota of respect or trust.

I ask each of you to be careful when appraising him as a supporter: he's a prostitute of the first order.

1. point taken. My only exposure to him is through his tv appearances.
Heh, I remember on Hardball when he and Chris Matthews did a "Shame on you!" to Ed Shultz, when Ed said that George Bush was an idiot.

3. I wasn't familiar with him prior to his appearances on m$nbc, but
at face value he is a lot more informed and talented than Hannity and O'Lielly. Your proximity might be coloring your perceptions. Or my lack of is.

9. He's strictly minor league...
Edited on Mon Jul-28-08 06:51 PM by PCIntern
when he went onto Bill Maher's show on HBO, he was telling his radio audience how he was gonna metaphorically (my word not his) smash in the faces of the liberals on the panel. He sat there like a fool and was afraid to open his mouth. I'm no fan of O'Reilly or Limbaugh, but they are glib, angry, have some knowledge of history and recent events. They skew everything in the worst, absolute worst ways available, but Smerconish is a cipher, an absolute zero in this regard. Trust me.

My proximity renders me more qualified to make these statements, not less. I've listened to him for years and he is a Dope.

15. He's from Doylestown
He isn't even from Philadelphia nor did he grow up there.

He went to Lehigh University which is in Bethlehem, PA.

The guy has less Philly cred than I do.

6. "Posturing" is right
someone ought to start a pool on when Smerconish is going to throw Obama under the bus and come out in support of McCain.

It's all an act to sell himself as "moderate" and not beholden to the RW. But he has admitted that he voted for Bush twice, thus revealing himself to be an utter idiot.

I take exception to one point, though: you say, "he (Smerconish) is the most two-dimensional, narrow, uninformed, poorly-read, Northeast Philadelphia Stupid, RWer ever to appear on TV". But isn't Glenn Beck from Philly? (maybe not Northeast, but)

If Glenn Beck is in that competition, than Smerconish can't touch that level of stupid. Not to mention vile.

8. please see my post above.
Convincing everyone now that he is pro-Obama, will only make him a more effective surrogate for McCain later, when he publicly "comes to his senses" and "discovers" why he should support McCain.

12. I blame MSNBC for his phony support of Obama
They already have a crowded field of right wingers on their channel, so they had to "balance" things with phony right wingers acting like they favor Democrats.

(Amy Stoddard is another phony)

Rachel is the only real Democrat they use regularly, its easier for them to keep the content focused negatively on Obama by not using real Democrats.

14. Some of Smerc's books
I find it hard to believe that one of the absolute kool-aid drinkers of the Right whose worked on GOP campaigns since 1984 is now on our side.

Anyway some great books by Mr. Smerconish.

Flying Blind: How Political Correctness Continues to Compromise Airline Safety Post 9/11 (2004)
Muzzled: From T-Ball to Terrorism - True Stories That Should Be Fiction (2006)
Murdered by Mumia - about Murdered Philadelphia Police Officer, Daniel Faulkner.<2>

21. Thanks for your views on this as a Philly listener of his show...
I wondered about this guy...Smerc and how he was so chummy with Matthews and now a fave of (dancing with
"MC ROVE"..David Gregory...a fave of Chimpy in the Press Pool.)

Anyway, "Smerc" seems to have emerged as a "voice for the left" when many of us who saw him on Matthews, years ago, remember Chris introducing "Smerc" as a RW Radio Talk Show Host.

His latest appearances seem to be presenting himself as a "fair and balanced" snake. We all know about "slitherers." :-(

He's being presented as a "middler" when he's never changed his "skin."

Thanks for your background on him for those of us who live in other parts of the Country who might not understand what you know. I come from "Christian Fundie RW Radio" here in NC...so all I get is "PRAISE JESUS...HE IS THE ANSWER" and the usual Limpballs stuff on my radio. That's why I'm on the Internet and finally coughed up money for Satellite Radio to hear something different. With the Merger between XM and SIRRIUS, I wonder how long even my "PAYING" to hear something beyond RW and CHRISTIAN FUNDIE RADIO will last.

I spend more and more time on my comupter listening to Moyers, Flanders, and the rest I can get "Online" over paying more than I am for my DSL to deal with "Buy Outs and the rest." :-(
