gas prices and drilling. To drill or not to drill.

This will be created as an issue by the repukes, played largely, to motivate the zombies to return yet again to the polls for the good of America. And it has succeeded pretty well, so far, imho. I work with the public, and many people are very outspoken. Bush comes up and he's universally viewed negatively. Gas comes up, and a lot - small talk like the weather - and recently so has drilling. A lot of people think we should. I even saw some graffiti today, in this little town in which I work, on a placard on top of a gas pump today. The graffiti said, "Democrats won't drill. We need to drill." Of course, I had to reply (thankfully, I had a pen), but the point is that by Nov, this issue could wind up being the patriot test of 02 or the gay marriage test of 04.

Democrats and Obama need to be in front of this issue with a coherent response, and explain the reasons not to drill in such a way that it makes sense to the broadest number of people. If it comes down to the public believing the choice is preserving a caribou or lowering gas prices, we know most will go with lowering gas prices. As inaccurate as such a choice would be. We need a response. Obama needs to ready an effective response to this angle of attack from the right.

This is the kind of issue the repukes can, and are currently trying to use to, fool some of the people into voting repuke, by blaming the Dems' for wanting to protect an owl over helping the country loosen the grip of the Arab oil cartels on our economy, and lessen the money squeeze on the average American.

Have a strange sense of deja vu here, just like the last few elections.

This issue is a hidden play by the repukes, I can feel it. And it will work if we ignore it, or fail to effectively neutralize it.

1. The only problem is, it's a lie and a rethug distraction.
Feinstein wrote a simple article explaining it:

I SO don't want Dems to cave on this. Enough already with the caving! :grr:

4. "Even under the most optimistic scenarios, if we opened all of the wilderness areas
in America that Big Oil wants to drill in, it would only mean a 4-5 cent reduction in the price of a gallon of gasoline by 2025."

The United States should stop wasting time with this drilling crap and work instead on developing alternative, renewable energy.

5. It will be a war of perceptions, not a war of facts.
We have to be able to fight this particular battle, because it could well the "the" issue for many.

Why protect ANWR. Why protect our shorelines? What arguement best defends against the repuke mantra/image that it will equal lower gas prices?
