That will definitely take some of that faux outraged thunder out of McCain's campaign. He should pull out one of his aces at times like these. I know they have a bunch of them lined up.

Either him or Colin Powell (even though I think he is a war criminal, there are still a lot of people who admire and respect him).

1. I'd forgotten about Republican endorsements. Ahhhhhhh...
Hagel, Powell, anyone else?

Sure we wanna use him this soon?

There are worse ads and more hard times to come.

2. I'm sure Obama has lots of surprises up his sleeve for McCain.
Hagel's loyalties are kind of out there anyway. If Hagel was going to endorse McCain he would have already. Me thinks Obama and Hagel already have it worked out that Obama will put him out there when he needs him. Colin Powell too.

Now, I think at times like THIS, this is when you should play those kind of cards.

The Hagel Card would be prime right now. They both just came off the ME trip and Hagel could talk about how he knows Obama will be good on foreign affairs because he was with him and saw him work. It wouldn't look too politically calculated because they just came off of the trip.

Obama has lots of surprises. I'm sure using Hagel now won't detract from everything else he has in store. There is A LOT out there that is to his advantage right now.

6. I'd say yes...
establishing a core support early on (getting beyond 50%) in an election I think is so very important, because it engages the person in becoming "friends" with the candidate, and giving donations, telling friends and family about them, etc. I feel if we get some serious GOPers behind Obama (not all of them, but a few released over the next week would be great), then we can get Obama above 50% maybe even before the convention later this month!

3. I don't know if it's necessarily a given that he WILL endorse Obama.
He seems to be leaning that way, but he also seems very reluctant to hurt or undermine McCrazy's campaign. Powell might be an easier "get"--and is a bigger name. I hope Obama's people are working on them, because the new rap is that McCain is a reach-across-the-aisle guy and Obama is not. McNutz is going to go HARD after Indies once he's done shoring up his base, Obama MUST do it too.

4. Is there actually any reason to expect a Powell endorsement?
If that's in the air, I missed it.

5. I think Powell donated to McNutz's campaign during the primaries, but
has since indicated that he's open to endorsing Obama, and has been advising him on foreign policy. I can't see him going back to McCain now--I can't honestly believe he still wants to chain himself to the neocons (most of McCain's advisors) and their big ideas that wrecked his reputation. That's why I think Powell will be easier to extract an endorsement from. Hagel is still weirdly loyal to McCain, I don't know if he'll end up pulling the trigger. But, I expect he'll at least defend Obama, as he's been doing.

7. Personal loyalty I guess
that he find difficult or impossible to get over. And I agree that it is extremely unlikely that either of them will associate themselves in any shape or form with McCain. I have no idea about an endorsement. Hagel seems bent on maintaining at least an appearance of impartiality. I remember that a while back when he was asked yet again who he will endorse he said that he may not endorse anyone because what an endorsement means to him is going all the way, not just a few nice words. I do not think he is willing or able to go all negative on McCain, though some of the things he did say were scathing in spite of the obvious reticence in saying them.
