McCain: Our Campaign Isn't "Negative In The Slightest"

By Greg Sargent - August 1, 2008, 4:38PM

John McCain just held a presser in Florida. Here are the, er, high points:

* Said "I don't think our campaign is negative in the slightest." There are negative McCain ads running as we speak, and in the very same presser, he attacked Obama for injecting race into the campaign again.

* Blamed Obama for bringing up the issue of race in the campaign, and repeatedly said that Obama had "retracted" his charge that McCain is using race. It was obvious by the repetition of "retracted" that this was a cooked up talking point, and it was apparently a reference to the fact that the Obama campaign said it didn't think McCain had used race in the campaign.

But this wasn't a "retraction" at all: The Obama camp hasn't conceded he said that in the first place.

* Said he wants to move on from the race debate. But his campaign manager Rick Davis aggressively attacked Obama for allegedly playing the race card just today.

* Described a new Web ad implying that Obama believes he's the Messiah as "having some fun."

Is it happy hour yet?

Obama's campaign statement:

"It’s downright sad that on a day when we learned that 51,000 Americans lost their jobs, a candidate for the presidency is spending all of his time and the powerful platform he has on these sorts of juvenile antics," said spokesman Hari Sevugan. "Senator McCain can keep telling everyone how ‘proud’ he is of these political stunts which even his Republican friends and advisors have called ‘childish’, but Barack Obama will continue talking about his plan to jumpstart our economy by giving working families $1,000 of immediate relief."

1. Hey, McSame: "Having some fun" doesn't mean it isn't damaging.
Going out and getting drunk is "having some fun" for some. It's the drive home that's a killer.

Some people have fun by shooting off guns. Sometimes the bullets hit people (just ask Dick Cheney), and sometimes those people die.

Some people shoot up heroin for fun.

Others smoke pot.

Some people steal cars for fun.

Some people start wars for fun (you can speak to George Bush on this one).

So, just because it's done with the pretext of "having some fun" doesn't mean that it is acceptable, or that it isn't wrong, or that it won't cause harm to others.

And if you don't already know that, you have no business being President. But that I think you do know.

3. The new script?
McClown's previous ad claimed Obama was no different from Britney Spears or Paris Hilton. I don't know if they know how to have fun or not, but the ad was pretty stupid.

McClown is all over the place. He's trying to spin his disastrous ads as the product of a campaign that "fun."
