I think a candidate can get away with being old if they are sharp and spry
and seem young at heart, but if the candidate seems old, out of touch, forgets thing, doesn't seem hip, etc., then they have a big problem. And John McCain looks and sounds old!

I was riding with some guys in their late 20's I know who live in Grand Junction, CO (a very Republican town) and we got talking about the race and the one thing they brought up was "John McCain is fucking too OLD to be president!"

I had heard his age was a bigger problem than Obama being black. I think that is probably correct, and the fact that he comes across as old makes the age issue a big problem for him. And the beauty of it is Obama doesn't need to even bring it up because it's apparent to people every time they see McCain and hear him talk. Put him next to Obama who oozes youth, charisma, energy, being hip etc., and McCain looks really bad!

1. I don't need a president who's "hip"
but I do want a president who knows what the internet is and (basically) how it works, a president who knows how cell phones work, a president who can read his own e-mail, a president who doesn't consider so-called "urban" culture suspicious...

In summary, a president who lives in 2008, not 1958.

2. The next president will need energy and forward thinking outlook
in order to lead this country and the free world.

McCain just doesn't cut it.

3. I honestly don't like conversations about his age. There's so much ageism in this country already.
Too much anti-senior sentiment in the U.S. exists as it is.

The fact is that McCain is stupid and untrustworthy, no matter how old he is.

4. So true!
A man of his years, who was still sharp and witty, would exude the kind of experience and maturity that would counter Obama's youth in a way that would appeal to a lot of voters.

However, especially after eight years of a buffoon like Bush in the Oval Office, who sees a doddering, out-of-touch, senile old man as a suitable replacement?

5. Reagan could get away with his age
because he had the charisma and charm to pull it off. F.D.R. did too. McCain doesn't and neither did Dole. Fair or not, it's a problem for them.

9. I think McCain looks and acts much older than he is.
He's what, 72 this Aug., but walks and talks like he's 80.

I think his age is a problem and one of the factors that will eventually defeat him.

It's not a matter of 'ageism' but of realism. He no longer has the mental or physical stamina to function well as president of the US.

And I say this as someone quite close to him in age.
