This is big. This is really big.
McCain has conceded Indiana.

From 'Master Pollster' 538

McCain Just Says No to Indiana

A Democratic partisan in Indiana e-mailed to alert me to the Obama campaign's organizaing efforts in the Hoosier State. Obama presently has 14 field offices open in Indiana, and according to both my source and an article in the Indianapolis Star, has plans to open about a dozen more. The head of Obama's field operations in Indiana is Emily Parcell, who was Obama's political director in the Iowa caucuses.

The McCain campaign, meanwhile, has no offices in Indiana, and doesn't have plans to open any. From the Indianapolis Star article:

McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, is taking a different approach to Indiana.

Some might call it confident; some might call it laid-back at best.

Asked whether the campaign has any plans to open an office in Indiana, campaign spokeswoman Leah Yoon -- who is based in Michigan, not Indiana -- had a one-word answer: "No."

I have suggested before that there is a certain arrogance in the way that the McCain campaign conceives of the electoral map. While they have come around on states like Virginia, they have been slow to acknowledge that Obama has any chance in states like Montana, Indiana, and North Dakota, where polling has indicated a tight race. There have been seven Indiana polls conducted since April; McCain led in four of those polls, while Obama led in the other three.

Our demographic model thinks that Obama is somewhat defying gravity in Indiana and that McCain remains the slight favorite. Nevertheless, it thinks that Indiana will play a more central role in determining the outcome of the election than other ostensible swing states like Missouri, Wisconsin, Oregon or North Carolina. And one needn't go back very far to remember what happens when one campaign competes in a state and the other doesn't. Think of Obama's half-hearted efforts to compete in Kentucky, West Virginia and South Dakota in the Democratic primaries, and what happened to his results there. Likewise, consider the way that the Clinton campaign tried to hedge its bets in South Carolina and Wisconsin, and how voters in those states reacted. Or, consider the entire strategy of the Rudy Giuliani campaign outside the state of Florida.

Obama will spend nearly 24 consecutive hours in South Bend, Indiana on Tuesday and Wednesday, leading to speculation that he could name Evan Bayh as his Vice Presidential nominee. Should Obama take advantage of the opportunity in Indiana and pick Bayh? Perhaps; Bayh is exceptionally popular in Indiana, including with independents and many Republicans. But that might also give the McCain campaign an excuse to wake up and invest some resources in that state, which it is presently either too cocky or too afraid to betray weakness to do. It might be better to let the McCain campaign think it is calling a bluff, and instead show him a good hand.

1. Sounds like Ghouliani: worked so well for him, didn't it.
Maybe they're counting their pennies and can't afford Obama's brilliant ground game.

Good to read in any event.

6. I'm betting its all about the pennies.
and he can't afford to fight there.

There is a good diary up at kos from someone who lives there who about this already - this news is going to travel fast!
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/8/3/201144/6493/456/561955

Part of my personal strategy here in red county, FL, is voter 'resignation'. I think that may be one prong in Obama's strategy, too. See, none of my Republican friends are gung-ho McCain at all. They will sigh and vote - and honestly, if there is a line, I don't think they will vote at all.

SO - I buy bumperstickers and magnets with my own money, and carry them in my purse and car. If anyone beeps or waves or tells me they support Obama while I'm out and about, I give them one and ask them to please display it. If the people here in Republican country see Obama's name around, more than a little, it will depress them and make them feel 'resigned' to the fact that the republicans are going to lose and lose big this cycle - and they will not bother to vote. Trust me, they feel a slight whiff of it in the air already; I'm just spraying it on stronger and spreading it farther with a fan!!

Already I see more Obama than McCain stickers - in fact I hardly see any McCain at all!

I take this as a sign that we'd better work our asses off if we want any chance at all in Indiana.

27. Wow! I remember hearing about that story.
Sometimes I think that we would be better off splitting the country and letting the Necon nuts having a couple of states and let them destroy themselves with stupidty!! And the rest of the states we would rebuild this country and make sure everyone has equal rights, jobs and healthcare.

22. Obama is polling strong in Indiana
It is still an uphill battle because Daniels will probably win reelection for Governor. Nonetheless, this looks like it could be a real squeaker. I can't imagine why McCain would take it for granted. Maybe he figures that if he loses Indiana, then he probably lost by 150 electoral votes, so it just doesn't matter.

Check out these recent polls:

37. In 2004 Bush +20.7 and +15.7 in 2000. Maybe
McCain's camp is insane and is looking at past results and not current polls.

I didn't remember Indiana being THAT red

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/maps/obama_vs_mccain/ has the Electoral map and on bottom of page gives 2000 and 2004 results

It is not arrogance that McToad has, it's a lack of organization and overly confident that they will get the Hill in November. They will end up shooting themselves in the face because of it.

15. At the very least, it would be dandy to force McCain to spend more
money on a state he likely thought was in the bag.

Obama is pressing him on many fronts.

Let's drain McCain's coffers early and let's cause him to blow his stack as well.

18. I don't think Indiana is seriously in play.
Bush won 60% there. Even a 9% drop-off (which is WAY more than McCain is losing nationally) would mean McCain winning by 2-3%.

35. Indiana was struggling
When I left 2 years ago and that was when the economy was doing ok. I can't imagine what's going on right now in all those GM and Ford plants that were making trucks and SUVs in the state.

The GOP lost 2 congressional seats in Indiana in 2006.

Only one problem I see in Indiana is their archaic voting laws they put into effect after the GOPs 2006 spanking.
