"I plan on supprting the ticket and working for the ticket but I
have no plans to be part of it" rough quote

1. Many conservatives simply will not support a Mormon
There was an article last week about how evangelical leaders were warning McCain not to pick Romney as his running mate. They listed several reasons, but the underlying tone is that they simply do not like the fact that he is a Mormon. He might as well be Hindu as far as they're concerned.

Which makes me hope that McCain does pick Romney.

31. Well, Mormons do worship an imaginary prophet named Moroni.....
Edited on Tue Aug-05-08 07:34 AM by mwb970
Wikipedia on Moroni (prophet)

I simply don't understand Mormonism, it all sounds like insane idiocy to me. "Moroni"? They have got to be kidding with this crap.

Still, I really, really hope mccain picks the moronic Moroni-worshipping Mormon Romney. He is a big, tall lying doofus who will go nicely with the nasty, runty little lying doofus that is mccain. Talk about fair and balanced. It's the perfect ticket!

15. They could accept a Hindu over a Mormon

Mormon's are percieved as not only gutting the Holy Scriptures with the "Book of Mormon" but their aggressive efforts to bring in young people (ever notice that the local Mormon 'Church' is usually across the street or down the block from the high school?) is viewed as a real threat in their community. No Hindu ever tried to convince their child that that their understanding of Jesus is incomplete.

22. If that's supposed to be a reference to Bobby Jindal, he is Catholic
has been since high school.

He's a terrible candidate in so many ways, so why bring religion or ethnicity into it?

28. Well I do point out that he tends to hide that his real name is Piyush
And that racial politics are certainly a part of it.

34. Not only that, if you dare to utter the name "Piyush", you are a racist
so saith Sam Hanna, publisher of the Ouachita Citizen of West Monroe, anyway. The NOLA blogosphere (egged on by yours truly!) has settled on the moniker "PBJ", which keeps the P in there, and has the extra advantage of conjuring up images of a certain big-eared little boy getting hassled about his lame Archies lunchbox.

2. There are significant
splits within the republican party. Only a tiny fragment believe that McCain has a chance of winning; most of the republican party is hoping to keep enough seats in the House and Senate to stall any attempts for change by the Obama administration.

The group associated with Bush the Elder were pushing Willard Romney, in hopes that he could be the republican pitbull, and then run in 2012 on the "I told you so!" platform. One need look no further than the speech he delivered when he dropped out of their primary for confirmation of his plan.

But Willard Romney was the least popular of the republican candidates, among the group that was originally running. He is certainly aware of the down-side of running on a losing ticket.

6. Romney would have helped McCain in places like
Nevada where there are lots of Mormons, but he would have been a drag in the states where there are lots of Baptists who regard the Mormon Church as a cult.

Romney will never win election as a Republican president because the Republican base is the South, home of the Baptists.

Mormons are a fast growing church so they may become influential enough in the South for a Mormon one day to win that region. But that won't happen in the next 10 years.

7. 'I have no plans to be on the ticket' is not quite the same as and barely
masks 'I'd screw a toaster to be handed that level of celebrity.'

I think Romney's still in the mix.

32. Agreed, and also agreed with points made ...
I think he wants in the game any way possible, witness his spending 40 million of his own money ... I see this statement as standard denial, but I also see where he is hedging a bit in that he thinks he MIGHT NOT get picked ...

I don't dismiss him as a VP candidate like most ... I think the media will find a MUCH greater appreciation for him and frame him as a GREAT choice by McCain ... I know in his heart of hearts this is killing McCain, because I think he IS his best pick and he knows it, but it is killing his ego to think about doing it ...

I think Mitts would be a BIG help to McCain on a national level, and in some selected electoral states, as some have noted, the Nevada/Colorada areas, maybe Michigan ... But, I can't see how he helps in some of the bigger states BO is making a run at like Ohio and Virginia ... Might help to get Ga/NC a little closer to BO ...

I dont' want him on the ticket, cause he has big name recognition (and the media will NOT allow the negatives while accentuating the positives) and will lend more "economic creds" to McCain ... I worry about him, frankly ... And, for all those who are whinning about Bayh being lined up as a successor in the white house, Mitts would set up once McCain passed on - one way or another ...

33. Good points all. I worry about him, too.
He's a potent variable, although some fundies will be repelled by the Mormon affiliation.

On the other hand, they've painted themselves into a corner and they're stuck with McCain and whichever veep nom he picks. Romney seems as viable as any of the others. Unfortunately.

19. What's with all the VP turn downs this time?
Is this normal and I've just never noticed before? I can't imagine any of these people who claim they won't be part of the ticket are telling the truth...except Gore since he's done it before. Does anyone think Mitt would actually say no to this if asked?

21. That's something.
Mitt's no fool--he knows he'd be a heartbeat away from the Oval Office, because McCain more than likely would croak in office.

I'd like to say it's because Mitt and Gramps hate each other, but I think Mitt's afraid the ticket would lose and lose badly.

I am not concerned about Mittens.

Funny...

All this talk about who Obama should pick, who's strong and who's not. Any choice that Obama picks is 10 times better than whomever McSame picks.
