Got tire pressure? It's NO JOKE!
http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1829354,00.html?cnn=yes

How out of touch is Barack Obama? He's so out of touch that he suggested that if all Americans inflated their tires properly and took their cars for regular tune-ups, they could save as much oil as new offshore drilling would produce. Gleeful Republicans have made this their daily talking point, Rush Limbaugh is having a field day, and the Republican National Committee is sending tire gauges labeled "Barack Obama's Energy Plan" to Washington reporters.

But who's really out of touch? The Bush administration estimates that expanded offshore drilling could increase oil production by 200,000 barrels per day by 2030. We use about 20 million barrels per day, so that would meet about 1% of our demand two decades from now. Meanwhile, efficiency experts say that keeping tires inflated can improve gas mileage by 3%, and regular maintenance can add another 4%. Many drivers already follow their advice, but if everyone else did, we could reduce demand several percentage points immediately. In other words: Obama is right

2. Keeping your tires inflated really DOES improve fuel efficiency.
But that's a fact, so I can see where Republicans would have a problem with it.

5. My husband has been a fanatic about these measures forever
When I met him over 30 years ago he worked on cars. Oil changes, clean air filters and watching the tire inflation are all things he stressed to me over the years. You start with the easy things we can do right now and it does make a difference.

I'll never forget when W first took office. Cheney was asked about energy conservation. His response was like some "Now, now, we don't have to do that". Something like that. Now we'll have a winter where people could face harsh times keeping warm because of wasteful policies.

13. EVERY single method of lessening our use of fossil fuels should be considered.
I've been flamed for this before but I'll put it out there again: Drive-Thru fast food for anyone WITHOUT a HANDICAPPED placard should be banned. I've seen people sit in line at a drive thru and waste twenty minutes of gasoline. Car after Car after Car after Car after Car... and that's just looking out my office window.

How many millions of cars idle for twenty minutes EVERY DAY just to get fast food during lunch? Ten? Twenty? Thirty? MILLION?

Fast food for some reason is sacred. Every time I've brought it up here on this board I've been trashed.

BUT! Inflated tires becomes the Issue of the Day. Everyone is ready to jump on THAT bandwagon.

Aren't they all pieces of the SAME puzzle?

For what it's worth, I was in So. Lake Tahoe CA this last week. NOT A SINGLE DRIVE THRU to be found in the city. They seem to get along just fine. EVERY way of saving fuel should be considered in a serious way and I posit that Drive-Thru food IS A SERIOUS WASTE OF RESOURCES.

11. This tire pressure thing is not Obama's energy plan and the funny part is
Edited on Mon Aug-04-08 08:44 PM by MrWiggles
that even if this was the totality of Obama's energy plan it would still beat McCain's lame ass energy plan. That's how sad McCain's plan is. Obama and his campaign should be out there using language like "pathetic" and "embarrassing" to describe McCain's energy plan and his attempts to attack a real comprehensive energy plan that Obama has to offer that would create jobs, save energy, help the economy, help people, and save the environment.
