Postmodern John McCain: the presidential candidate some Arizonans know — and loathe
By Amy Silverman
Published on August 07, 2008

......

Amy Silverman knows her subject. She writes,

I've been a writer and editor at (the Phoenix) New Times for 15 years. For much of that time, I wrote about Arizona politics, which is to say that I wrote about John McCain. It's still odd to see the guy in the spotlight, because for quite a while, I was pretty much the only one covering him. I never did fall for him in the way reporters fall for politicians, probably because he wasn't much to fall for back in the early 1990s. In those days, McCain was still rehabilitating the image he'd later sell to the national media. He was known then for cavorting in the Bahamas with Charlie Keating, rather than for fighting for campaign finance reform and limited government spending.

...................................

Postmodern McCain is just not as much fun as his predecessor, the straight-ahead, shit-talking bad guy.

Watching him up on the stage, struggling with the teleprompter, Cindy looking miserable next to him, I almost pitied the GOP's presumptive nominee. No more nasty jokes, no public outbursts. He's reduced to talking about climate change and accusing Obama of being the media's flavor of the day.

"Don't feel sorry for him," a friend said. "The guy might wind up president."

2. Amy Silverman knows more about McCain than anyone; without her and her employer, New Times,
reporting, much of McCain's slimy maneuverings would never be known--only she has the courage to cover him as he shopuld be covered.

For LOTS more from her, Google "Phoenix New Times," her name and "McCain."

8. He feels like he's OWED the presidence, he really does.
Those locals who've never supported him are nearly scared silly of him as President. He has the strongest sense of entitlement you can imagine, refuses to take even the best advice (unlike GWB, who is clearly controlled by Cheney, et al).

His campaign really IS that bad. He surrounds himself only with yes men; he hasn't a clue how things work in the real world. I was a volunteer for Mo Udall way back in the day and always thought Mo should have distanced himself from McCain, but he saw promise in him over Mo's beloved environmental agenda. McCain duped him just as he did Goldwater on the abortion issue (Goldwater always supported Roe v. Wade and his family FOUNDED the local Planned Parenthood way, way back). No Goldwater fan I, but Barry always put Arizona first (like Mo). McCain doesn't give a damn about the state--he's got his eyes on the presidency, nothing more.

He's more self-centered than Bush and no one has a stronger sense of entitlement than McCain which is clear from the Obama attacks full or jealousy and resentment).

And even some of his Republican co-horts are on record saying so. Karl Rove's main-man may be running his campaign, but he doesn't really need him because McCain is just as nasty. He may be hindered now because of his seeming increased mental confusion.

4. This passage makes me feel somewhat sorry for Cindy McCain
"During my short tenure at AVMT, I have been surrounded by what on the surface appears to be the ultimate all-American family. In reality, I am working for a very sad, lonely woman whose marriage of convenience to a U.S. Senator has driven her to: distance herself from friends; cover feelings of despair with drugs; and replace lonely moments with self-indulgences."

22. Not me
I don't feel sorry anymore for any of these women married to Repug monsters. They are enablers. Cindy has millions and Laura would get millions from Poppy to keep her mouth shut if she divorced the Chimp. So they are not in it because they have to be. They are in it for the power and are just as bad as their husbands because they do nothing to expose the insanity.

6. Someone, please get Silverman a spot on "Countdown." She's nice-looking, erudite, and witty.
And she's not afraid to speak truth to power, as this story clearly demonstrates.

This is the McCain savvy locals know all too well; he's become increasingly bitter, controlling, and has always felt entitled to privileges most of us couldn't even think of.

9. Kick because Silverman knows the real McCain but isn't at all charmed by him.
Every McCain opponent should see this article--every surrogate, candidate, fundraiser, media consultant, etc.

10. K&R for great background on Keating also
Thanks for the Phoenix New Times link to refresh our memories of the Keating corruption stuff. I didn't realize that Keating had business relations with Cindy's father either.

No one seems to remember Keating much, anymore. Amazing. McCain and his fellow Arizonan, Democrat Dennis DeConcini, were hauled before the Senate Ethics Committee along with three other senators to explain their actions on behalf of Keating's Lincoln Savings and Loan. Keating gave the senators hefty campaign contributions, then called on them to meet with bank regulators to pressure them to go soft on an investigation of Lincoln. There were two infamous meetings. McCain attended both.

It's true that McCain was the first to back off when the appearance of impropriety became obvious, and the ethics committee was easier on him than most of the others, partly because some of McCain's actions on behalf of Keating took place while he was in the House, and therefore not under the purview of the Senate Ethics Committee.

More important, what often gets lost in the retelling is McCain's close personal relationship with Keating. McCain took trips with Keating, including to his retreat in the Bahamas, and reimbursed him only after the fact was made public. It was also revealed that Keating had a business relationship with Cindy and her father, Jim Hensley, who ran a very lucrative Anheuser-Busch distributorship in Phoenix.
