Antichrist Obama Ad-Makes "Willie Horton Ad" Seem Benign (Time Magazine)
Edited on Fri Aug-08-08 11:07 AM by kpete
An Antichrist Obama in McCain Ad?
By AMY SULLIVAN/WASHINGTON

"It's not easy to make the infamous Willie Horton ad from the 1988 presidential campaign seem benign. But suggesting that Barack Obama is the Antichrist might just do it."

It could have been coincidence. To be honest few of us thought the McCain Campaign was in-touch enough with Christian voters to pull something this despicable. But Amy got to the source, which sets aside any suggestion that this may be a coincidence:

"The ad was the creation of Fred Davis, one of McCain's top media gurus, as well as a close friend of former Christian Coalition head Ralph Reed and the nephew of conservative Oklahoma Senator James Inhofe. It first caught the attention of Democrats familiar with the Left Behind series, a fictionalized account of the end time that debuted in the 1990s and has sold nearly 70 million books worldwide. "The language in there is so similar to the language in the Left Behind books," says Tony Campolo, a leading progressive evangelical speaker and author."

"The visual images in the ad, which Davis says has been viewed even more than the McCain's "Celeb" ad linking Obama to the likes of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, also seem to evoke the cover art of several Left Behind books. But they're not the cartoonish images of clouds parting and shining light upon Obama that might be expected in an ad spoofing him as a messiah. Instead, the screen displays a sinister orange light surrounded by darkness and later the faint image of a staircase leading up to heaven...

2. Somehow I think this will resonate with the crazy fundies because
the lower they go, the more excited their base will get. But for all of us normal people, we just see it for the BS that it is.

3. The commercial features a clip of Obama dryly joking about
the charges that he was forming a cult, that people who came to listen to him were being brainwashed. Oddly enough, it's the same clip Hillary took out of context during the primaries. A lot of her supporters her on DU did the same.

4. anti-christ?
I've seen both, and the Willie Horton ad was much worse. That was clearly an intent to raise racial fears. But the anti-christ? Come on. I don't get that message at all.

19. Me, too, but the Left Behind series has had over 63 million dollars in sales.
They were flying off the shelves of Walmart when they first came out. Lots of lots of religious fundies have read them. This ad is meant to speak to them, not us.

9. Dude - that message is purely and solely intending to call Obama the anti-Christ.
Perhaps you don't understand the language of the evangelical nutbag "Christian" right, but calling Obama the anti-Christ is the ONLY message of this ad.

11. My take
I just thought it was pointing out that Obama had an inflated image of himself, i.e., a god complex. But hey -- I don't know squat about end of world junk or anti-christ imagery.

Then again, how do all you DU'ers know so much about what fringe RW imagery?

13. I had one in the family so I know the crap they enjoy
This is just my opinion so take it for what it's worth.

The McLame campaign is desperate for support from the fundies and they are pulling out all the stops to get it. Fundies are idiots but they have long memories and hold grudges better than any other group of whackjobs. McSame once called patwah robertson an evil presence or something to that effect and that was insulting to those who pretty much consider these purveyors of diarrhea authorities on all things. They don't like McDouche so he has to do something.

McCombover doesn't give a shit about fundies, I actually think he hates them almost as much as I do but he knows he needs them and employs dirtbags that know how to get to them. He has no scruples or soul so he doesn't give a shit if they want him to sell it to them.

One or more of those dirtbags knows that fundies understand all kind of RW fucktarded imagery about the end times and drool over the shit called the "left behind" series. These pricks also know that most sane people, such as yourself, don't know about the imagery and shit so they pretend to make a "funny" little ad mocking Obama's celebrity. Inside this ad are all kinds of images and words designed to tickle the orgasmogland in the fundie and remind them of the time they read left behind #34 or whatever when some Muslim guy was speaking and actually turned into the antichrist.

McBush and his minions hope that this brings all the fundies off their knees in November so they can elect the non anti-christ into office. Why, I don't know you'd think the fundie idiot would be trying to elect the anti-christ to speed along the end times and bring them all to sit beside the poor bastard that got himself nailed to a plus sign a couple of thousand years ago for pissing off the romans.

All of course IMO.

6. That stuff aint gonna work
The economy is terrible right now.

No way that ad is going to resonate. Even the Xtian Fundamentalists have a huge split on issues right now.

The Xtian right is floudering as a voting constituency. As long as Biden is not the VP then the Dems will have no problems getting people to vote their wallets.

17. While I *HOPE* You're right...
I think you're using logic to anticipate how people will vote.

NOTHING would bring fundies out like an "anti-Christ" scare.

In fact, to be honest, the link could make Obama's assassination 100 times more likely than it's been for the last 18 months.

Edited on Fri Aug-08-08 11:29 AM by wienerdoggie
makes me fear for Obama's life. If you REALLY thought he was the AC, wouldn't you be the hero of all Christianity for stopping him (and by stopping him, I don't mean voting for McCain)? People will do anything in the name of religion. Now I'm going to worry about this, on top of the KKK-types and the plain old RW nutjobs I was already worried about--like the dude who was caught yesterday.

10. Well at least the media isn't playing this one on a loop ad nauseum
I guess that anybody could make an ad saying anything about anybody if we lived in a country where we didn't have the 4th estate to look out for that kind of thing. Oh....that's right, the media is helping sell this ridiculous shit.

Obama better hurry up with his commercial on McCain called "first Wife left behind-How Serial Adulterer John McCain committed sin over and over again".

12. Man, I can't wait until 2012.
I mean, where do you go once you've played the antichrist card?
Traitor: check.
Terrorist: check.
antichrist: check.

Anything else will seem benign after this.
2012:
Marge: "Now they're saying Obama raped a baby seal when he was a teenager."
Frank: " That's nothing. Last time he was the antichrist and we elected him. So big deal. What's on TV?"

What else is there? Alien?

And I LOVE IT that they mention a connection to Ralph Reed; scammer of Native Americans, close personal friend of Jack Abramoff, and the absolute MODEL of scumbagness.

15. Actually, this scares the crap out of me.
Okay, maybe everything scares me. I'm a nervous Nellie, and may be until November 5th... or January 20th.

But I got an e-mail about this earlier today, and the long, long list of links that could be drawn between Obama and the "Anti-Christ", Nicolae Carpathia, in the LEFT BEHIND books is frightening.

~~~~~~~~
"Based on dispensationalist interpretation of prophecies in the Biblical books of Revelation, Isaiah and Ezekiel, Left Behind tells the story of the end times, in which many have been "raptured," leaving the world shattered and chaotic. As people scramble for answers, a Romanian politician named Nicolae Jetty Carpathia rises to become secretary-general of the United Nations, promising to restore peace and stability to all nations. What most of the world does not realize is that Carpathia is actually the Antichrist foretold from the Bible."
~~~~~~~~
A lot of my Bible-belt Christian friends read those bookS and loved them. There's even a movie...

I honestly hope that there are enough people at the campaign level who take this more seriously than here on DU. This could EASILY erode the black Christian vote, and drive fundamentalists to the polls. And those who are unfamiliar with the books, or the way of thinking that made them so popular, wouldn't even know why we lost!

18. Your friends weren't going to vote for Obama anyway.
The only churches who believe that fairy stuff that will vote for Obama are the African American Churches. The other fundie churches were never gonna vote for him anyway.

24. You're missing it...
Of course, they weren't going to vote for him, but some of them would have stayed home!!!!!

If the fundies think that Obama is the anti-Christ, they will wake up their relatives from the dead and drag them to the polls to make sure McCain gets elected.

Even the Bible-thumpers say the AC is to come from the European Union.

;-)

It's an idiotic, disgusting, rascist ad.
